Open Source Bootcamp 5 - Relational Database Management Systems
May 20th, 2008 - 4pm to 7pm
2000 Minto Centre, Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario
At this event, come hear long time industry experts John Smedley and
Rob Bernier talk about open source Relational Database Management
Systems (RDBMSs). RDBMSs are the workhorse data storage system of
information technology (IT). According to Forrester (2006), open
source RDBMSs can provide a total cost of ownership that is 50% that
of a closed source RDBMS. Another article by Lacy (2006) reported
using open source RDBMSs can reduce TCO by up to 90%. Whatever the
precise number, when trying to make the most of scarce budgets, the
potential to save money on one of the most expensive components of a
system makes a lot of sense. John and Rob will present information
detailing why an open source RDBMSs make a lot of sense for today's
information technology. This is a very rare opportunity to hear about
two leading RDBMSs in a single evening event.

Open Source Bootcamp 6 - Geospatial Information Systems
June 2nd and 3rd, 2008 - 8:30am - 5:30pm

This will be the biggest open source bootcamp of the year.
Technology has triggered major changes in the geospatial information
system (GIS) industry. What was once the exclusive realm of highly
specialized researchers is becoming accessible to many in the form of
web based mapping applications and hand held devices with rich
navigation capabilities. Also, the notion of a geospatial industry is
blurred and replaced with spatial awareness being added to enterprise
information technology applications. Open source software is another
significant factor causing change in the industry.
The event is co-produced by the Open Source Geospatial Foundation
(OSGeo - http://www.osgeo.org) and involves industry leading speakers
that would normally speak at events that cost hundreds of dollars for
registration.
