But today Sun announced the purchase of MySQL.

Doesn't anyone find that a bit interesting?

On a similar note, why doesn't IBM's powers to be, wake up and smell the coffee and acquire SAP?
;-)

I think it means more trouble for MySQL than anyone else.

MySQL does ok on small data, but chokes and dies on anything sizable.

In many dot-coms, speaking from experience, it's the kids running MySQL, and
they expect it to scale up, which it won't, at least for right now. Until
the Falcon engine really comes of age, and partitioning matures, MySQL is still
not going to be a threat for the next few years. Many of the bigger shops hell
bent on MySQL are using overlay products to offset the broken-ness of MySQL,
such as Continuent, and its open sores cousin Sequoia. MySQL is really over
in the camp of auto-commit databases, so it's not going to be a choice for real
enterprise databases, not for a long time. Like SQL-Server and other engines
that are basically auto-commit, you cannot control logging the way you can with
Informix, or DB2, or <gasp> Oracle. Until that kind of functionality is in
MySQL it isn't going to be a threat. MySQL has the mindshare of the kidz running
the dot-coms, but they learn after their data starts to grow that MySQL is good
for small stuff, but not for real enterprise. Maybe Sun wants to get in the game,
kinda like they tried with storage, chasing after EMC. They have a lot of cash,
so maybe they can afford to waste time with MySQL.

Maybe Mark is confusing Volkswagen wit SAP (that can easily happen ;-).
And even that one has long been settles by the EU.

May be, the Volkswagen law (state law of Lower Saxony to keep influence on
Volkswagen) is a thing of the past.
To my knowledge there was no cartel "STOP" called by a german government in
the past 10 to 15 years.

Ok, it would be charming to see little Lary bitching about IBM buying SAP
(or SAP switching back to informix) and kicking Oracle out of the SAP world.

Sigh...

IBM has been for a long time a global corporation with extensive operations in Germany.
So the issue wouldn't be IBM purchasing SAP based on the fact that IBM is not a German company and would move jobs to India, Viet Nam or some other "global sourced" labor.

The issue would be if IBM's purchasing SAP would hurt the industry. And the answer to that is no. Thanks to Oracle purchasing Peoplesoft which had just purchased JDEdwards, you now have a competitor which is striving to offer the same types of services/software. What IBM has that Oracle doesn't is hardware. (Oracle's purchase plans of BEA show that they are beefing up their middleware and have long been selling apps. Therefore IBM would not be a monopoly and would not harm competition. In fact the purchase of SAP would make IBM more competitive because they would be capable of competing against Oracle, while at the same time, their services division is also selling Oracle's solution.

IMHO, there shouldn't be any government hurdles, while Sun and or Oracle may object, it will ultimately pass.  The only reason that you don't see any of this is due to the inability for this generation of IBM Execs looking past their retirement date.

Well they have been kicked out of the SAP company. It's a start.

for starters, an IBM mailing from yesterday:

German only, announces a cost free workshop, "optimizing infrastructure and costs with DB2 and SAP", held at the SAP academy in Waldorf. Would be nice to see "with DB2 or Informix" in future releases ;-) This would be the day dropping of my wife at IKEA Waldorf (no matter what it costs...) and me hopping across the street to SAP ;-)

So the DB´s guys at IBM are still there...
