In one of the discussions recently someone mentioned there was an issue
with setting TAPEDEV to greater than 2000000 (to allow for the backup of a
greater than 2GB archive) and for that reason they needed to use a public
domain utility called "expect" to return confirmation when ontape prompts
for a new tape. Is this just an issue when archiving to disk or is it the
case with TAPEDEV in general. I have mentioned this to Informix who seem to
think TAPEDEV >2gb is okay but also came up with the standard line on not
supporting ontape to disk. I believe Art mentioned last week something to
quote to Informix support to say that it is supported. Unfortunately I
didn't have that information to hand so if anyone can supply this as well
I'd be most grateful

Configuring a tape device > 2GB is not a problem - I have used 25GB DLT's
for archiving logs and data.

The problem that you may have is the limit of the maximum file size as part
of the OS. Within AIX, if you configure your devices with a greater PP size,
you can have a whapping great file system that can store files > 2GB.
Therefor, you should be able to point TAPEDEV to a disk file on a file
system that can support files > 2GB.

Also, there may be a kernel parameter that may need to be configured ( not
too sure at the os level, sorry ).

For what its worth !!

TAPEDEV > 2GB works fine, if you have the right version (and if
the OS allows it). There was a bug in ontape that prevented >2GB
backups to disk. It was fixed somewhere around 7.23UC5, I think.

ontape to disk is supported, but it didn't used to be.

How about backing up directly to raw disk? You don't have any problems
then. I think you would be constrained by the 4GByte limit on an EMC
logical unit, but you can always use Solstice DiskSuite to create a logical
volume in excess of that.

I can vouch for the fact that this works fine on HP-UX!

Actually, I don't know if there was a time when it wasn't supported, although
there was definitely a time when people *said* it wasn't supported (now, for
instance ;-) AFAIK, Product Development and QA have always done testing with
ontape (and even tbtape) to disk, therefore, it has been "supported". The
article you should quote to Informix staff who insist on telling you it isn't
supported is Tech Alert 6125.
