need for JPEG successor?

Hey everyone,
I've noticed MS has published a 'JPEG successor' called HD Photo. I was
wondering why would there be a need for such a thing. What are the
current shortcommings of JPEG? I know JPEG has some patent 'issues',

I apologize if this has been asked before but I personally couldn't
