Flat memory is when the chips are mounted directly on the
motherboard. More common nowadays is vertical memory, with the chips
on separate modules mounted vertically.

On the contrary, flat memory refers to dram chips which use a planar
process for their storage arrays, as opposed to some manufacturers that
use a deep trench lined with oxide and filled with polysilicon to make
the storage cell.

Neumann architecture is named after the concept of the famous alfred
neumann who did the seminal work in the 50's, based on lack of concern
for defects.
