Hey there.

I am trying to build a small, self routing network of PDA's. I am
still in the brainstorming phase. Could someone tell me where to go to
get info on IR and RF networking? I would like to have the devices
detect new peers on the fly. I really need to know an informed
opinions on the pros and cons of each. Is this something someone has
done already that I could look at? I'm new to the PDA programming
world and I appreciate any help.

web pages or alternate usenet would be good too. Thanks!

More information is needed. Which PDA's are you using or want to use?
What resources do the PDA's have? What kind of ranges and line of sight
do you have?

If they are modern PDA's and have at least one pcmcia slot, there are off
the shelf wireless ethernet cards. I think it's the 802.11 standard, but the
cards take care of collision detection, announcing their own MACs and IPs...
besides, any external device you can build will be bulky, and reinventing
the wheel at that.

In the RF Networking domain (within a building or area) Cisco have
some useful gear (RF networking routers) and, I presume, the standard
PC cards that help to complete the link. There is quite a bit of FAQ
like info on their web-site <http://www.cisco.com/> I think but I can
check when I get close enough to fire up the other system again (not
this minute though).

Thanks All! I have used your replies to help me do research on the net
and I am starting to get it. I have a bunch to learn but I am getting
there.

Does anyone have any comments on The combination of PocketLinux and the
VTech Helio PDA?
