Many of my customers speak highly of it (BASCOM-AVR). I personally don't
use it, but I probably would if there was a port for FreeBSD Unix.

Yes, I like them, and use them all the time for Atmel chips.
The Bascom 8051 is a bit trickier in that you need to get or make a "Config"
file
for each 8051 derivative if one isn't available for the MCU your looking at.
But it is easy to do.
The free eval demo compiler is full featured, except it is limited to 2k of
program space, so you try try it
out without buying at first.

That is good news, actually; new 8051 derivatives keep coming along and it's
good to know I won't be limited to the ones they thought of.
