SOME TOPICS RELATED TO INTELIGENT SYSTEMS

Course organized in cooperation with the Spanish RIG of IEEE
Neural Network Council.
Almuñecar (Granada, Spain)
15-19 September 1997
CENTRO MEDITERRANEO DE LA UNIVERSIDAD DE GRANADA
XIII Cursos Internacionales 1997

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
SCOPE

Intelligent systems are those man-made systems that show
reasoning, learning from experience and rational decision making
capabilities, without human intervention. The aim is to
understand, and imitate as far as possible, the way human, animal
and other biological systems evolve and learn procedures to solve
difficult problems. In order to design these systems, besides the
traditional numerical-symbolic computation, other paradigms are
used: artificial neural networks (with their learning,
generalization, adaptation and classification capabilities), fuzzy
logic (which offers a methodology to deal with imprecision) and
evolutionary computation (which is a valuable tool to solve
optimization problems emulating Nature´s evolution). The above
mentioned systems allow us to approach new applications in control
theory, robotics, signal processing, business, financial planning
and security, for instance. The purpose of this course is to give,
in just a week, a broad background relevant to computer
scientists, engineers, physicists, applied mathematicians,
psychologists, and other profesionals.

Location
The course will be held in Almuñecar, a small town lying in a
tropical valley beside the Mediterranean. It is located between
Granada (70 Km) with its Alhambra, and the cosmopolitan city of
Malaga (80 Km.), and is just 90 minutes from the Sierra Nevada ski
resort.

Almuñécar is characterized by its history and archeological
remains, by its people, local customs and traditions. The layout
strikes a happy balance between town and village. More than 12
miles of beaches, backed by pinecovered cliffs create a seascape
of outstanding natural beauty. There are exotic birds and tropical
trees, ecological reserves and contrasting landscapes, horizons
that let the imagination run free. The tourist facilities offer
everything from buzzing nightlife to the peace and quiet of a
relaxing break fromit all. In short, there is a complete range of
leisure, pleasure and sporting possibilities.

One of the charms of Almuñecar is that the old town (built on two
hills) retains its typical Andalusian look, with narrow streets of
whitewashed houses, profusely decorated with flowers, and is
almost completely pedestrianized. The development of the resort
area, along the beachfront, has hardly affected the old town.

(more information at: http://atc.ugr.es/almunecar/index.html)

Transportation
Almuñécar is one hour from Granada Airport, and an hour and a
quarter from Malaga International Airport. There is a bus service
connecting Almuñecar to these two cities. The taxi fare from
Granada Airport to Almuñecar is 9500 ptas., and from Malaga
Airport, it is 9000 ptas.

Bus timetable (winter schedule; in summer the frequency is
higher):
Granada-Almuñécar 7:30 9:00 10:15 13:00 17:00 20:00
Málaga-Almuñécar3:00 7:00 11:00 12:30 13:30
