 Sunday Events for January 2008

All events begin at 1:00 p.m.

Jan 6th    “Problems of Torture and the American Psychological Association”

Rachel MacNair, Ph.D.

Dr. MacNair will discuss the controversy over psychologists' participation during interrogations.  Peace psychology principles have shown institutional dynamics make it unwise for psychologists to be caught up in the system and political considerations suggest any indications of approval is unwise.  Despite this APA board voted psychologists' presence acceptable hoping to ameliorate the problem.  Dr. MacNair is the author of the following books: The Psychology of Peace and Perpetration-Induced Traumatic Stress.

Jan 13th    “Did you know the Kansas minimum wage is $2.65?”

Heidi Zeller from Raise the Wage Kansas
Daniel Romero from Interfaith Worker Justice in the KC area.

The Kansas action network, a coalition for workers rights has mounted a tri-city campaign to raise the wage by city ordinance in Topeka, Wichita, and KCK.  The KC campaign is preparing to launch and organizers Heidi and Daniel are here to talk about it.

Jan 20th    “Behavior learning and the Cerebellum”

Dr. Chi-Ming Huang - UMKC Professor of Biological Sciences.

Eventually we wanted to make some connection between human culture and evolution, seeking connection between brain structure, human culture and evolution, using structural as well as functional approaches. We'd like to generate some discussion, criticisms, and other thought.

Jan 27th    “Immigrant Musings”

Iggy Dybal, Russian immigrant.

Never having been a religious person, Iggy came to America to work for the Salvation Army. Iggy will share his views on life and religion in Russia and what he finds fascinating in his new home: America.
