Hi,

Sorry if this isn't the right group, but I wonder if http://commonjs.org/
is active. curl -v http://commonjs.org/ says the connection is
accepted, but there's no repsonse.

Please let me know if it's working for you and/or there's a better
place to report this issue.

Thanks!
John

Voltaire is messed up at the moment. I'm working now so I've already
poked Greg to restart it since what I'm working on is on that same server.
Eventually I'll move commonjs to one of my own servers.

For some time yesterday, I was getting PHP error reports from the
server. Now it's back to accepting the connection without sending any
response.

Daniel,

Do you need a mirror and/or DR site?

Daniel,

Is there any way you can pop the CommonJS.org site back up long enough that I can mirror it?

There's information in the wiki I need.

The server is still running... there's just something inexplicably wrong
with anything using php on that server for some reason now...
The dumps are still available http://wiki.commonjs.org/dumps/

I need to find some method of keeping my own personal servers backed up.
The server that commonjs is currently on is kept backed up automatically
by a computer running in the office.
But I don't run any machine 24/7 at home, and I don't like using the
cloud for backups in this case, I want a physical hard drive with
backups on it. When I can figure out how to solve that issue I can move
the commonjs site to one of my own servers.

Can we get a new home for the hosting on this.

I'm sure joyent or heroku or someone will donate some hosting and resolve this kind of stuff for us.

So the wiki is still dead, right? It looks like the main page and the
http://commonjs.org/impl/ page are available, but http://wiki.commonjs.org
and http://commonjs.org/specs/ are giving errors.

A few questions.

Does anyone know what the current traffic looks like to commonjs.org?

What are the services we're currently using. MySQL/MediaWiki/ModPHP???

I *really* don't want to change any of the tooling because that discussion will be endless. I just want what we had to be back up.

I've thrown up a mirror for anybody needing access to the specs while we sort out the hosting situation.

Mirror is at http://www.page.ca/~wes/cjs/commonjs.org/

You're probably most interested in http://www.page.ca/~wes/cjs/wiki.commonjs.org/wiki/

Obviously, this is a static (read only) mirror.

Let me know if I've missed anything really important that I might be able to add.

I've heard rumor that there's a need arisen for new hosting for
commonjs.org. Being that I'm interested in the health and well being
of this community, I'd be happy to offer a free VM to host the site
on.... If you're interested, let me know. When does the switch need to
occur?

Since I can't find out why MediaWiki is completely broken on voltaire,
I've moved the sites to one of my own servers now (however they'll be
unavailable till the dns gets changed).
Unfortunately this new server will NOT have an automatic physical backup
until I am able to set one up at home.

Random people wanting to run cron jobs to keep their own copy of the
full.xml wiki dump would be welcome.
To make that even easier I've setup a rsync server on the new server you
can use to keep a copy of your own up to date.
Note that the wiki's dump cron job runs daily, so please don't bother
running an hourly cron job.
When the dns is fixed you can rsync the full.xml dump using:
$ rsync --progress commonjs.org::commonjs/dumps/full.xml .

I suppose it's up to Chris if he wants to hand over the domain, but
trying to transfer the site to a new server is troublesome without
control over the dns.

The problem isn't really hosting per se - that's relatively easy to come by.  The problem is the man-power required to set up, create content, manage the site on a long-term basis, and be able to react to effect repairs when something goes wrong -- as was the case this week.

Dan Friesen's been doing a pretty good job of handling all those tasks solo (including providing the hosting), but he had a bad week and wasn't able to react to an outage as quickly as we would have liked.

Part of Dan's slow reaction time is due to his desire to provide only the most robust solution for the community, including on-site back-up options.  Dan's a young guy, and with that sometimes comes myopia: in this case, he inadvertenly made the perfect the enemy of the good. In a hilarious twist of happenstance, the hostname of the machine giving him grief is Voltaire.

I personally don't see a need to move the domain at this moment, but I do see a need to maintain at least one off-site mirror.  I intend to run one which is a simple static snapshot of the production site.

If anybody out there knows how to set up MediaWiki and wants to help me set up a disaster-recovery site, that would be cool, too.

This is a great characterization of the situation.

I kind of want some named company (Joyent, Heroku, Media Temple) to host this for us in exchange for a nice link on the front page. Then when it goes down their brand is attached to it a little and it lights a fire to get it fixed. This way the only thing we need from our community is someone designated to be the contact person with the company.

no, please stop.

let's try not to mix in a tool switch here.

let's just deal with the hosting issues and not attempt to debate the tools in question until after we get hosting worked out.

after commonjs.org is back up i would welcome a long discussion about tools that might be better than MediaWiki but not until after we deal with the problems at hand.
