Dear Common Cycle
Question for building up a specialized allez. I have a Shimano 105
right side STI that is a 10 speed and a Shimano ultegra left side that
is 2 x 9. I was going to use a 10 speed rear derailleur but wanted to
know if I should use a 2 x 9 or a 2 x 10 for the front derailleur?
Also should I use a 9 or 10 speed chain? Or would it be a lot better
to just make sure my STI's match better? Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks
Malcolm

Hi Malcom,
Your front shifter doesn't care whether you're running 9 or 10 speed
in the rear. You need to use whatever chain matches your cassette (9
or 10 sp). Your shifters don't have to match; they're separate units.
