I am trying to control a DirecTV box over IP. I have a few commands working in my script but the response times are very slow, has anyone ever had this experience? How did you solve it? I know the guys over at JAG made a GUI for this so maybe they would know?

Another possibly unrelated note: The remote debug page loads extremely slowly, (5-10 seconds to start). Other network controlled devices are really fast.

Thanks for any and all help!

I'm not at JAG anymore.

I did not use the IP protocol, I used RS232 (232 to USB cable plugged
into USB port on back of receiver) which (to me at least) appears to
react faster to commands.

Fiasco,

What did you use for a control system? :)

Thanks,

Aaron

Is there a specific usb to rs232 cable you need, or will any old one do?

Thanks!

We now have commands running quickly from our browsers and with JAG's old interface using static http commands.  In the gist below we have pasted our code and the output. We are outputting similar http requests using Javascript, but don't can't get the same results. Our requests fire but the return information lags and doesn't work.

It's not JAG's. It's mine and I don't work for JAG anymore :)

Michael, at home I use a Moxa NPort and UPB commands.

Michael.

IOGear GUC-232A USB-RS232 cable. Plug it in the back of the receiver
and then reboot it.

Does anyone know why our code doesn't work? Never really got an answer from anybody specifically about the code.

Thanks!

The code looks fine from what I can tell. Any delay there seems to me like it must be caused from the end device.

The DirecTv boxes, especially older HRXX and HXX series receivers with the latest guides and menus run extremely slow via IP.  At some instances at my house, it can take up to 30-45 seconds for a command to respond.  Its really the architecture of the older boxes trying to run the newer firmwares that just slow down.  Even the IR is slower.  If you upgrade to an HR or H24 to 25, you should see the response your expecting.

The box we are using is a brand new HR24 and speed is not an issue when sending the codes through the browser, so we must be sending something a bit wrong. Thoughts?

I may have to release my multiple directv receiver control and
feedback js module into the wild.

Come on Fiasco, open the doors on DirecTV. By the way, if your not with JAG, are you available for some telecommuting?
We pass up a lot of projects because we simply do not have the man power.

Yes, I can do remote programming but I'm only interested in work where there is a well defined scope.
