Hi Guys,

I made contact with Samsung regarding the difficulty in On/Off control on their Smart TV's

I asked them about implementing W-O-L within the design and here is the response

Thank you for contacting Samsung Customer Support.

I am contacting in response to your enquiry via our "Contact the CEO" forum.

Thank you for taking the time to communicate your comments to us, this has been escalated to our AV Product and Development Team for this perusal and attention.

This will certainly be a point for consideration moving forward.

Kind regards

Sean Archer

Unless you actually know someone at Samsung, I doubt they'll actually implement it. WOL will hurt their energy saving certificate. Samsung TV on standby registers 0 Watts on my meter.

Would be better if they added a serial "jack" (like Panasonic do) which is disabled by default (0 watts and all that)
then with a flick of the switch everybody wins.
Why do you need WOL waldy? do they not enable power up via this via IP (I see the strangeness in the question).

You can use the service port via a TTL converter, they just need to enable power on from a hidden menu like Sharp does.

I think its possible to enable WOL, power on via service port etc by changing the firmware on the TV, I'm not risking it yet

The reason I posted is because I have read that there is no facility to power up the tv via IP. There is no rs232 port so basically you would need to power up via I/R and then use IP for control.

Unless I am wrong about this. Was thinking of buying one but there seems to be limitations

CEC will turn the TV on

Yeah, that will do the job. They did not have any in stock when u was looking so I got the kwikwai one instead.

There is a cheaper £29 USB to CEC, but you'll have to convert it to serial

Hi, I've got the more expensive k1-100 (red one) which allows debugging. There is a cheaper k1-090 (purple one). They are powered by mini USB and you can send CEC via ethernet and RS232, not sure if you can send CEC USB.

So this is a device that goes on the HDMI cable so you can send info. Ie. the smart tv will switch on when it recognises some data on the CEC line. BUT. Can you send info to turn the set off? Also if you set the tv to switch on when this is true, then surely you don't need a device like this when the TV is connected to say an AV receiver or sky box.

Yes, the device can be connected to an unused HDMI input on the TV or even an input on an amplifier, Turn on & off the TV & AMP separately, change inputs, adjust volume, etc

Does the protocol handle volume and channel feedback? Or are you just using this for Power on and off, (handling the rest of the control  via another means)

Don't know about feedback, didn't play with that, you do see 2 way traffic on 100 unit

Can someone send a link to the Samsung protocol?

Thanks in advance,
