Search the google Group for onkyo, there have been quite a few posts which relate to the control over both RS232 and Ethernet.

When i send standby to my receiver with ISCP\x00\x00\x00\x10\x00\x00\x00\x08\x01\x00\x00\x00!1PWR00\x0D
i can't send the power On, because the receiver is out of network (when is in standby!)

There is probably an option in the Onkyo settings menu to have network enabled in standby.
I know my Denon has this option (Called 'Network Standby > Enabled').

Interesting side note to this:  I did this with a Kill-a-watt connected to a similar receiver, and with network standby off the device pulled only a couple watts in standby, but with network standby on it pulled about 90 watts.  Many receivers do not have separate power supplies for the networking electronics, and it leaves your main power supply running.  Serial or IR control generally do NOT do this, and operate at very low current while powered off.   Just an FYI.

Yes very good point. This was documented in my Denon manual, so went with RS232 instead.

Enable  = control over ethernet work all the time
Disable = control over ethernet work only when the receiver is ON
