Rhaimie, I hope you're paying attention, because you can use this as
ammunition when you sell Mystery Investigators to the schools.

Thanks for the link HiHo and JF. This is really helpful

When my brother and me set out to create our graphic novel, we already
had in mind the target readers - the so called reluctant readers
between the ages of 9-12. We knew it would not be easy because to sell
to this group we need to convince teachers and especially parents what
the graphic novel was all about - that it's a comic with purpose. To
convince parents and teachers, we sent our story to academics for
review - not just any academics but those specialising in language and
communication. We also invited professional comic creators to review
the illustration after which a press release was sent. Our story
received considerable media coverage.

Having done all that, it was still an uphill task - convincing parents
and teachers. But we will not stop there. In the long run we want
comics and graphic novels be accepted not just for their entertainment
value but also as a medium to impart knowledge and moral ethics or
just help promote the reading habit. Hopefully mindsets will change -
that the general public will view comics beyond Batman and Superman (I
am not against comics purely for entertainment - there must be
variety).

We are all for this change but we know change will not be immediate.
It is a gradual process and many sides need to contribute - from the
media, creators and critics. There must be a concerted effort and
groupings like CCsg I believe can help stimulate this effort.

At the launch, we had a brief but nonetheless good chat on perception
and acceptance of comics and graphic novels in the Singapore context.
For those who had missed what was said on the launch, you may view the

Also as Mr Shawn Yap stated, I must agree that my messages do not come
out nicely. I must apologize for that.

But still Sonny, playing the devil's advocate can work. I can play it,
because I can take it. I can take heavy criticism. And so people can
shoot me. It takes drastic measures to make people aware sometimes.
And i can be that person to take action, because i can take it.
