Hey,

For you IRC'ers out there, I've started up a channel for Columbus'
very own Ruby Brigade. I'm going through the necessary rigamarole to
get this thing official, but I'll be hanging out in it most days. I
know many of you might be trying to bring Ruby or Rails into your
worklife, but might be stuck on something and you don't have any
resources to turn to. Hopefully, this will turn into the Columbus
community banding together to help each other out. If you have any
questions, just shoot me an email.

Hi,

This is Winston from the SouthEast Michigan Ruby Brigade.

I like the sound of members helping out other members. With that in
mind, how do you feel about forming a MidWest mailing list or a
MidWest.rb irc channel.

During our last meeting there was some talk about casting a bigger
community net without going out directly to the ruby or rails mailing
list.

I love the idea actually.

Is there a way to 'meta-group' in Google Groups?

Being from SE Mich I think it's a cool idea. I'll have to try and make
one of your meetings one of the times I'm up there.

Michiganders lurking in a Columbus group?! Oh! Soon you'll know the
secret to the RAILS-ified Buckeye playbook, key to almost-national-
championships! :-)

Actually, I am glad to discover your group is there ( http://rubymi.org
). Cool Wiki!

And I'm sure Greg of RubyPittsburgh ( http://groups.google.com/group/rubypgh
), who sometimes forwards posts, will have something to say.

Ruby? Scarlet & Grey? See the connection

Maize and Blue certainly doesn't match ;-)

Oh well, as long as it's not Orange & Blue :-(

Winston,

That's a great idea. I'd love to see mailing lists and IRC used as a
resource for some of the "lonely" developers working in a company
without any help to turn to. The Offical Rails mailing list and IRC
channels are great, but there's just too many people and there's a lot
of chatter. I'm all for a regional channel to get things going.

Winston, what do you see as the next step?

If it's for real-time help, then it's not so important that we share geography, but that we share a time zone. Most of my Ruby "Arrghs!" occur from 8-5, local time. Maybe it should be an Eastern Time Zone regional group?

Also: our company doesn't allow IRC, so a mailing list is most interesting to me.

My company blocks IRC as well, but I just found the appropriately
named http://ircatwork.com/. I connected to #columbusrb successfully
from the office with it. Thought I'd share the find - FYI.

Didn't someone start a Campfire room for the CRB once upon a time,
too?

Yes, a free Campfire room was created a long time ago but was basically unusable since it would only hold 5 people or so (due to the "Free" version restrictions).

I just arrived at Portland for RailsConf, so I'll be a bit erratic in
my posts times. Three members of SEMI.rb are going to be here, and
two "ghost' members who I just meet on the light rail.

If any one else is in the area, send me a message and I'll give you my cell.

Next Steps:
* float the idea to the Grand Rapids Ruby Brigade.
* check the status of the Toledo Group, and send them a message.

We have several approaches for connecting that I see.
1) Form a MidWest Ruby Brigade mailing list. Maybe through Google.
2) Form an IRC channel. I think the Columbus channel is a great one
and I think one for the MidWest would have more traffic. Taking the
idea of the same time zone... maybe an East Coast Ruby Brigade?
Whatever is needed to form a critical mass.

As of now, I don't know of any software that can keep the groups
separate but have the option of cross posting. So I guess right now
I'm thing of having a separate list for the MidWest that people can
sign up for.

If the value of the channel is its immediacy, then it might end up as local-to-time-zone by default. I believe I've seen some activity on CRB's google group from other areas of the world, but they can only reasonably expect a quick turnaround from 8 until 5 Columbus time. So if we invite as many groups as possible in the time zone, then it might settle into that dynamic naturally.

Perhaps it would be fun to go by stages: invite from PA to MI, see how it flows, invite from ME to VA to IN, see how it goes, etc. When we think maximum fun is being had, or we've invited Ontario, Quebec, Chile, and Palmer Station, we stop inviting.
