Position Description
POSITION TITLE: GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM OPERATOR
SUMMARY:
Under supervision of the Natural Resource Manager, responsible for
geographic information system and relevant data collection and
reporting for the agency.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: this position minimally requires the following:
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Associate or Bachelor degree in parks and recreation, conservation,
natural resource management, geographic information systems (GIS),
and/or related disciplines. Two years experience in a GIS related
computer technology.
CERTIFICATES OR LICENSES:
Must possess a valid Ohio Driver's License and a good driving record.
Must obtain and/or be able to maintain Park District approved first
aid and CPR certifications.
Required Training: All Geauga County Park District employees shall be
required to complete and maintain all general mandatory training.
These may include, but are not limited to, emergency communications,
hazardous materials, personal protective equipment, sexual harassment,
violence in the workplace and fire prevention.
Other: Must be able to work under pressure and to meet deadlines.
Must be able to work under adverse weather conditions and to follow an
irregular schedule. Required to be able to work independently and as a
team member of a work crew. Knowledge of computer and office equipment
operation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: includes the following. Other
related duties may be assigned.
Works with global positioning system (GPS) and GIS related desktop
software. Experience in Arc View software including layouts, etc.
Experience with pathfinder Software, and Trimble GPS preferred.
Experience with Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, Printers &
Plotters, Digital Cameras and Software, etc.
Responsible for the inventory of natural resources utilizing GPS and
GIS technology. Responsible for incorporating inventories into GIS
Software, Databases, and park management plans. Responsible for
writing park management plans based on data collection and system
inventories.
Creates maps and other materials documenting natural resources,
property and political boundaries, infrastructure and other related
data collected through field visits.
Assist in the implementation of land management objectives and
practices.
Consult with GPD staff, outside agencies, committees, and the public on
a variety of natural resource management and park planning issues.
Utilize GPS and GIS technology to assist in monitoring and data
collection. Monitor critical habitats. Monitor flora and fauna.
Monitor wildlife populations for a variety of negative impacts.
Monitor park boundaries and infrastructure.
Assist with natural resource management and land stewardship
educational programming.
Assist with routine maintenance on land management equipment and
vehicles.
May develop estimates to facilitate budget preparation, write
stewardship reports, mark park boundary lines per established surveys,
assist with new trail alignments and their subsequent mapping using
global positioning system equipment.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position may supervise seasonal employees and interns. This
position may supervise Geauga Park District staff on GPS and GIS
related projects. May act as a liaison between the Park District and
volunteer groups.

COMPUTER EXPERTISE REQUIRED / EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
Ability to compose routine letters, memos and similar correspondence
using word processing, as well as database files. Ability to operate
department's office equipment, including printers, plotters, Arc View
GIS software, Trimble GPS, and all GPS/GIS related software.

Computer, printer, typewriter, copy machine, fax machine, telephone and
other general office equipment.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
This position requires the employee to drive Agency vehicles and
operate necessary data collection equipment.
Ability to work in a confidential manner.
KNOWLEDGE:
General understanding and knowledge of land management practices,
natural resource management practices, habitat types, forest types,
species and biological components specific to Northeast Ohio. Mapping,
and computer information technologies. General knowledge of land
titles, deeds, surveys, and geographical components. Knowledge of data
collection and data management. Must have knowledge of the agency's
goals and objectives as demonstrated in management strategies and plans
for the Geauga Park District's natural resources
SKILLS:
Must be highly accurate and detailed. Skill in specialized data
collection techniques. Skill in data entry, database files management
and reporting of data. Must possess good organizational skills. Must be
highly skilled in the identification of flora and fauna native to Ohio.
Skill in effective oral and written communications. . Must work
independently and with self direction.
ABILITIES:
Ability to gather, document, sort, organize and report specialized
data. Ability to record, transfer, correct, manipulate and export GIS
data. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to use
required equipment, vehicles and tools. Ability to work effectively and
cooperatively with staff, the public and co-workers with diplomacy and
tact. Ability to construct plans and make appropriate recommendations
for decision making. Must be able to provide accurate and complete
reports in a timely manner. Ability to communicate effectively orally
and in writing. Must be able to solve routine and complex problems.
Must be able to make appropriate decisions and handle stressful
situations. Ability to gather, sort, collate, analyze data and report
findings.

printed forms, the employee must be able to stand, walk, sit, talk or
hear, use hands to finger, handle or feel, climb or balance, stoop,
kneel, crouch or crawl and reach with hands and arms; may occasionally
be required to lift up to 50 pounds; and is required to be able to use
close vision and adjust visual focus. May be exposed to adverse weather
conditions.

This employee normally works in an office environment. Also works in
