What should Columbia's relationship to the Harlem community be like, before and after the expansion?

What is the role of Columbia students in making positive change on and off campus?

How do issues of power and privilege work into this?

Just a quick reminder, that tomorrow, SCEG is hosting a townhall around issues of expansion and gentrification facilitated by ROOTed. We had a tremendously successful event at Floridita advocating for maintaining that restaurant in the community a couple weeks ago, and we want to maintain the energy by keeping people thinking critically about these issues, with an eye to seeing what kind of actions can be taken in the future. Come speak up about your own personal experience and the type of Columbia you would like to see.

There is going to be an important community meeting held this Saturday, December 13th by the community body which has been negotiating with Columbia on issues of community benefits, the LDC. This has been a very conflictual and divisive process between people in the community that want to be more accomodationist to Columbia and those that are more oppositional, but we have been specifically asked to bring out as many people as possible to this meeting.

Don't want to spam you, but tomorrow SCEG is putting together a walking tour of the areas around the expansion with Vicki Gholson a CB9 and community member who was extremely helpful and supportive during the hunger strike. As this is one of the great unresolved issues of the strike, I encourage everyone who can to show up at the gates tomorrow at 12:30!

Campus activists!
CODEPINK, a prominent woman's activist group against war, has been organizing a training camp on Columbia's campus for Saturday, March 8. There will be music, lectures, and training sessions. Topics include global struggles & global solidarity, non-violent action, diversity and anti-racism training, art + activism, resisting militarization and counter-recruitment, knowing legal rights, getting media attention, and other great topics. Although it's titled "women as peacemakers and agents of change"... don't be fooled, this is open for men and women. The programing and flier are copied and attached below.
