Seems easier to build on an Arduino platform (or RasPi if more computing horse power is needed).

Oh, and the 555 bot doesn't really balance. I remember that project. It needs an overhead light source to stay upright (not an under foot gravity source).

I think an arduino phone based one would be pretty cool. Surely the accelerometer and gyro in the phone are capable enough? You'd just need a way to control the motors with the phone...

Yeah using an android phone/tablet would be really cool.
There are some projects out there using the IOIO or the newer IOIO-OTG board.
