Browsing craigslist and found this place - might be another one to check out?

3 room office suite - $400/mo utilities included with month to month available.

The cheapest office space in town is probably in the parkade center basement.
There is also some really nice office space on vandiver drive.  The one I rented
there was about 3-4 offices worth and was $400/month.  It was a large open
space with 25% of it sectioned off with a separate door.  That might be a nice
feature if people wanted to store semi-private stuff.  A location with "free
advertising" is going to be expensive.  If you don't care about location though
I think something maybe even a little outside of the city limits might give you
a better price and more flexibility than an office space.  Something outside the
city limit is more likely to allow things like welders and torches.

... outside city/county might also allow shipping containers as building? Maker Space made by Makers... Mad Makers at that.

I know, I know... old ground/code enforcement/requires sponsorship for up front land purchase, etc.

I think buying land is a great idea but unfortunately boone county has a minimum
lot size of 10 acres which would make the minimum price at least 30-40k.
Would it be possible to lease a small amount of land somewhere and then buy/build
a small portable building or buildings?  A small garage can be purchases outright
for a couple thousand dollars.

This is in Jeff City but I think something like this might be the best option:
http://columbiamo.craigslist.org/prk/3378895221.html

It's only $140/month.

10 acres is the minimum size for one of the agricultural zonings, but you
can get smaller lots. My house is on a little over an acre, for instance,
but I'm in area with a residential zoning.

It's great to see so much active discussion about getting a physical location for CGW.  I think we should designate this first effort as v0.1 and focus on getting into a space sometime around the first of January.

The first home for CGW doesn't have to be everything we want or can imagine but it should:

1 - Meet basic needs for space, security, power, and connectivity.
2 - Be sustainably affordable.  To me, this means having cheap rent and a month-to-month lease.

I suggest anyone with a space to consider, set up an appointment to see the space.  Set it at least two or three days in advance and announce it here on the group.  Anyone who wants to go, be there.  Take pictures and post details here afterward.  I'll go to as many as I can fit in.

Specific details we'll need on each space:

1) rent / security deposit.
2) sqft.
3) layout, ammenities
4) access
5) Location
6) special rules or considerations.
7) Utilities
8) Internet options.

That should give us a basis to compare spaces and make a decision.

I have access to two spaces in N. Columbia that we can look at any time between now and Monday.
The first is here:

It rents for $600/month.  A nice space with a small air-conditioned office and a bathroom (with shower!).  Very high ceilings, Heat in the main part, Lots of power including 3-phase.

The next one rents for $400/month.  It has two overhead doors and a walk-in door.  Appears to have heat. No AC.  This is a very basic space but cheap.

Also available in the same strip is another unit 1/2 the size.  A single overhead door.  I don't have a key for that one but it is only $200/month!

Any of these are available month-to-month.

Let me know when/if you'd like to see them.  How about mid-day Saturday?

Hi,
These sound interesting. I tend to think closer into town is better. The second one is a decent location and price.
I would be up to visiting these on Saturday.

But I want to be clear. You moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of the police forces and the fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn't have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory...

Now look. You built a factory and it turned into something terrific or a great idea - God bless! Keep a big hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and you pay forward for the next kid who comes along."

I will be unavailable Saturday, as the Mythbusters are in St. Louis this weekend. The cheaper options for this Sat seem appealing, though.
