Group Project/Program Ideas

Lets see if we can get the ideas a little more refined and start ironing out a schedule for some of these.

On another note, since we got the projector and everything up and running tonight, how about we start a monthly movie night? I know we've talked about having a movie night and everybody seems to like the idea, so let's get something recurring on the calendar and see how it goes. Any suggestions for when we should have our first movie night?

Was the "The Most Useless Machine EVER!" Peter Tiptons idea?
If he was not there, ask him to bring his in. He built a really nice
wooden one of these.

Another idea for the list: a drone (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, or maybe
Unmanned land vehicle).
A drone has something for everyone, combining 5 things already on your
list:
Ham radio (for telemetry and remote control, maybe live video)
CAM-CNC (for the mechanical parts)
Motors (for servos or steppers)
Raspberry Pi or Arduino (for on-board computer, autopilot
controller,..) plus sensors (GPS, accelerometers, altimeter)
Quadcopters (or RC model aircraft).

I have a project idea/open source project idea: A Hackable Camera Platform

I know, I know, there are lots of cheap cameras out there, why is this necessary? Hear me out:

1) You can do a lot by printing accessories for your DSLR or taking apart a webcam, but there are manufacturer design choices that limit what you can do with a camera (integrated filters for instance)

2) What if you want to cool your chip to try photon counting? You only need a focal plane sensor for your telescope? You want to make your own FLIR out of a normal CCD chip? You want to added an image intensifier to make night vision goggles? Ready made solutions make this sort of hacking difficult. Lenses may be integrated, it might not be easy to get the sensor off the board, etc.

3) Sometimes you have hackable software (CHDK) sometimes you don't (I don't think there is anything for Nikon)
