[Columbia Astronomy Outreach] Lecture & Stargazing tonight at 7pm!

Hi Everyone,

Come learn how supernovae are giving us insight into the future of our Universe! At 7pm tonight Ashley Pagnotta, a post-doc at AMNH, will be discussing her research in a talk entitled, "Supernovae: Cosmic Candles of the Universe". Unfortunately, it doesn't look like observing will be possible as the clouds have rolled in since this morning, but as always, we have a great line up of astronomy options for tonight so it's definitely still worth the trip!

Abstract: Humans have long been interested in the history and fate of our Universe. In this talk, I will explain how astronomers used a particular type of supernova explosion to discover not only that the Universe expanding, but that its expansion is accelerating. Everything is flying apart faster and faster as time goes on. I will also discuss aspects of these supernova explosions that still baffle us and the work currently being done to understand them.
