Hello Moor
I am transferring my post about The McGoohan 7 to here as it neatly
reinforces PMcG's comments from the Troyer interview and his choice
of words such as The Prisoner being a "serial" of 7 episodes which
was the standard language of the day for a "limited series".
The quote from PMcG comes from an article in the Washington Post Nov
19,1969. The article originated in the LA Times a month earlier from
an interview by film critic Kevin Thomas.
Here is the quote concerning The Prisoner:
"The Prisoner? Well that was an experimental kind of thing for
television. Originally,I wanted to do only seven episodes, but CBS
wouldn't buy it. I stopped at 17. I had had enough.
"I was astonished that it got a sort of faithful audience--better than
I expected. We never thought of it in terms of an audience of 25 or 30
million."
The Washington Post, Nov 19, 1969
I have typed the quote verbatim. So far as I can tell this was PMcG's
first comments in the States about The Prisoner after the second run
of the series here concluded in September of 1969.
The quote about "The 7" is the earliest I have been able to find. The
article contains some of PMcG's plans for the future such as an
attempt to film Brand in Monument Valley in the U.S. The article runs
about 700 words.
