Racial Profiling of Visible Minority Youth in Calgary

Date: May 2, 2011

Re:  Invitation to community members/clients for focus groups

Dear Ethno-Cultural Council of Calgary:

I am conducting research on racial profiling in Calgary as part of a Master’s of Social Work thesis on racial profiling through the University of Calgary. There will be three focus groups which will take place on Thursday, June 9, 2011 from 5:00-7:00pm, Friday, June 10, 2011 from 5:00-7:00pm and Saturday, June 11, 2011 from 11:30-2:00pm. In addition to these focus groups, the participants will be meeting with the Ethno-Cultural Council of Calgary (ECCC) following the conclusion of the third focus group on Saturday, June 11, 2011 from 2:00-3:00pm.

I will be looking for participants to take part in these focus groups who currently reside in Calgary and who are a visible minority between the ages of 18 and 25.

In order to gather information for the project, I will be conducting three focus groups and one meeting with the ECCC over the course of a week. Each of the three focus groups will be approximately two hours in length. During these focus groups, we will explore the group’s definition of racial profiling and in what ways the participants have encountered racial profiling in Calgary. The final focus group will concentrate on the creation of an action plan which will address racial profiling in Calgary. After the final focus group, the participants will be requested to meet with ECCC to present an action plan which they will consider mobilizing.

The information collected from the research study will be used for three purposes: 1) to define racial profiling in Calgary from the perspective of visible minority community members; 2) explore how visible minorities in Calgary experience racial profiling in the recent months and years; and 3) develop recommendations for an action plan.

Snacks and refreshments will also be provided for all three focus groups and at the meeting with ECCC.

Please see the attached document to pass on to your community members and/or clients who would be a good fit for this study.

If you have any further questions or comments about the study please feel free to contact me via email: kulwan...@yahoo.com or phone: 403-615-9352.

Thank you for your time.
