I've gone brain dead, and maybe I'm just not searching for the right
stuff.

I have some images (my daughter's Homecoming) that'd I'd like to burn
to a CD in a way that would make it easy for my parents to just pop in
the computer and have them display. Some sort of a gallery thing,
preferably.

They're running XP and are really pretty basic users, so simpler is
better.

However, I'd also like it to work if you pop it into a Linux box.

I suspect that I need a short bit of basic education and a couple of
links to get me sorted out, but I'm just not finding things that
appear to be helpful.

Pointers and discussion will be *greatly* appreciated.

Thanks.

Ken

While not really a Linux specific tool, I think Picasa has a tool for making a backup or slideshow CD. Picasa does work in Linux (you can find it on Google's site) but I've never acually tried the slideshow option so don't know how well it works. Anyway, just a thought.
F-spot also has an export feature for CD and other options. That might meet your need too but not sure what it does exactly as I've never tried it.
The easiest option is probably just to upload to any photo sharing site and then you don't have to do anything. Sites like Snapfish also allow people you designate to order prints which is great for sharing with family and they pay so it saves you money. Picasa web is cool because you can also download the full resolution image which most other sites don't allow or charge for. However, unless you pay I think you only get 250MB of free space on Picasa which is fine for short projects but not for long term storage or more than a few hundred pics.

I should have mentioned that I have my own site running gallery, but
since my parents are still on dialup, CD is a much wider bandwidth for
them :)

I'll look into Picasa though, thanks.

Ken,

I was going to recommend Photo CD, but it seems to have fallen out of vogue. Then, I
was going to recommend "authoring" a regular Video DVD or Video CD, but they invariably
change the images to fit the format of the presentation, and they're labor intense,
especially the first few times through... So, what do I recommend, then? In a
nutshell, I recommend with only slight bias, that you "do it the easy way".

0. DON'T modify the pictures that originally came off the camera. Create copies for
processing, instead. Processing software will always get better, and you'll be glad you
can go back to the originals.

1. Save copies of your pictures to a portable format like JPEG, if needed.
2. Rename your pictures so that they appear in the order you want, if needed.
3. Burn the pictures straight to the root folder of the CD or DVD using whichever app
you like best. Anything will do it; it's a simple job.

That disc will work nicely in Windows, Linux, and most DVD players.

If you're into production, you won't be satisfied with that, though. You'll want to
make a nice slideshow, set it to music, and publish that to a Video DVD or Video CD. If
that's your bent, try Varsha, DeVeDe, or whatever's on the UbuntuStudio disc.

I am not 100% positive, but I seem to remember that Blue Marine http://bluemarine.tidalwave.it had a plugin for a slideshow. I am not sure if that slideshow could be exported to a CD or not, but you may want to look into it.
