Not only close to the telephone line, but your equipment has to be within a fairly
short distance from the switching center (either the central office, or a remotely
located switch). When I had my land-line telephone installed, I asked the
lineman about the possibility of DSL. He responded with a big belly laugh, and
said that there was no way possible, given my location. As a result, I'm on an
RF microwave link for internet service, which I've been generally pleased with [1].
