Hi all,

I've been a lurker here for quite a while now, but I had a question that some of you might have a good solution for. I currently have an Insight Business broadband account so that I can have a static IP. They are telling me that they do not offer static IPs on the residential side at all. The problem is that I'm probably paying double what I would be paying on the residential side and I really don't need/use any of the business services. So, I'm wondering if anyone could recommend a good broadband provider that will not cost a fortune that will still offer a static IP?

thoughts?
Thanks
Andrew

Is it vital that you have a static IP? You could use a dynamic DNS
service instead, if you had a residential Insight account. Most home
routers these days have dynamic DNS integration which will keep you
from having to manage the IP update by hand.

I would second the DynDNS service if you can. we have Insight BB residential and for what it is worth, our IP changes maybe once every few months.

Unfortunately, I have a few domains that I run from the house so using dyndns starts getting a bit pricy too.
Ultimately, I guess it would be cheaper, but maybe not ideal.

Thanks!

Agreed with above, my IP address hasn't changed in 6 months for my residential account, and dynamic DNS works just fine.

Apparently Insight gets twitchy about common service ports (80, 25,
etc.) on residential service, so you will have a problem there too --
I've been using cheap (~$4/mo) virtual hosting for web-things, and
free personal DynDNS (responder running on DD-WRT'd router) for
getting into the house via SSH and such on Insight.

I just started looking at virtual host solutions after the first response from Dustin.
I'm thinking about getting a virtual host, sticking some stuff on there and then setting
up a VPN back to the house through a free dyndns account. This would allow me to
set up proxys or whatever I need from my home server. I'm currently looking at
vr.org which has servers starting at $10/month with root access and full control over
the server. They also have a bunch of linux flavors to chose from.
