Sounds interesting... Is there a particular direction in mind for a
lua-specific group?

Personally I'd love to see something like an 'emerging-languages' group...
Where a variety of compelling but lesser used - and likely not large enough
to maintain a dedicated crowd for the duration - languages and related
technologies could be presented on, discussed and otherwise fostered...

Depending on the format, it could have something new and useful for
everybody...

Thanks,

That's the beauty of corona. Both platform support OpenGL, which has a lua
interpreter, which they exploit. So I have one code set and can deploy to
Android, nook, kindle, and iOS.

I could do a demo or talk about it next Wednesday if you guys are
interested. I'm never been to the building, is there a projector/big
monitor with hdmi?

Subject: Re: FCPS Test Scores

At this point in time, school districts are not "open data."  They have
historically been tightly controlled by FCPS and will not be part of the
data sets available at launch.  Open Lexington should make it a priority to
visit them and make the case for opening up their data.  Nick Such and I
had this on our radar back in the summer but it fell off.  Once we (the
city) go live next week I firmly feel that others will follow suit if for
no other reason than looking bad if they don't.

Does the PVA allow one to get a total dump of their address and assessed
valued property?  We (the city) maintain the parcels/lot lines but we have
no stake in the assessment game.  I do know that once per year the
"certified tax roll" for all properties are sent to the state for their
blessing so it is all public data and should be made available.  Has anyone
every asked the PVA for this?  He seems like he is trying to foster better
relations with the community so he may be agreeable to this.

So, if you have those data sets it becomes pretty easy at that point to
just use a GIS package to throw it all together and do some analysis.
Given that we have looked at this data for the past 15 years internally, I
don't think you are going to find anything too exciting.

The only real "gotcha" is when you consider that there is a percentage (not
sure how high or low it is) of students who are out of district or
participate in a magnet program that is not based on their address....so
they don't fall neatly into boxes.

If one were so inclined or bored you could download their PDFs and digitize
the school districts in less than an hour.  :)

Sorry for rambling.  Hope this helps.
Chad

awesome maps using a bunch of census data:

Specifically the median home value. It's broken up by census tracts.

Subject: Re: FCPS Test Scores

Chad makes a good point about matching school scores to neighborhoods.
Many of the scores will be skewed by magnet programs as well as parents
trying to cheat the system.  The school board has an incentive to move
magnet programs to schools that do not test well - that's why the gifted
and talented program runs at Winburn middle school as opposed to a
school which is more central to the students that use it.  Parents that
are concerned about school testing scores will go to great lengths to
get their kids into the top performing schools, regardless of where they
live.  This is not to say that there would not be any value in combing
the school and property value data, but that the analysis would not
simply be a matter of combing the two data sets and printing out a map.

I would like to see a better assessment done on schools which include
more factors than just test scores.  It might also be interesting if you
could break out test scores from students in magnet programs (the kids
that are "bused in") and then associate them back to their own
neighborhood (like x percentage of kids in some neighborhood are going
out of their district for school) which would give you a better idea of
how property values correlate to level of education.

Cool stuff - I'm looking forward to the launch of Open Lexington and I'm
hoping to participate as it moves forward.

Andrew

Zillow is OK... however their calculations are based on recent sales
history. We have found that areas that don't have recent sales are way
undervalued. In one subdivision I examined, only 2 houses had sold out of
about 50 in the past 20 years. The Zillow estimates ended up being over
$100,000 out of touch with what the houses were actually worth at dollars
per square foot. Also, because Zillow tries to formulate using averages, it
is also affected where subdivision boundaries occur. From what I could
tell, Zillow seems to be better for areas that have high turnover and are
in the middle of a subdivision, but can't really be relied upon for much
else other than current PVA value and last sale value.

Thanks for all your thoughts on this!
Net-net I guess we can sum it up to what we already know which is that there is a pattern between the wealth of the community and the kid’s academic scores.

Since these scores do vary widely does that not imply that our schools are economically segregated?
