Subject: Update from the DOD (contractor)

Good afternoon everyone,
I just met with a few gentleman from a a DOD contractor which works on
non-proliferation. They are investigating Collabbit and like softwares at
the instruction of the department of defense to include in packaged
offerings by the US to foreign partners. Their client at the DOD requested
they investigate Collabbit because the client saw/heard about Collabbit and
liked it.

The meeting went well with a basic demonstration and project history. I
answered basic questions about the technical infrastructure around Collabbit
(we host Collabbit by default as that's easier on organizations without ruby
on rails support) and downloadable packages (it's not pretty now but we plan
to make the downloadable code more usable in the future).

They seemed very interested in Collabbit's future ability to translate into
other languages. As I understand it, localization is relatively easy in RoR
and I passed that information along. There may be an opportunity to partner
with this company, should they decide to use Collabbit for anything, as they
have a professional team of translators who might be able to quickly get
Collabbit into another language.

I took a few action items from the meeting.

1) Contact current users from the Salvation Army and Red Cross to ask if
they wouldn't mind standing as references for Collabbit.
2) Create a brochure for prospective users that might be passed around hand
to hand and find it onto someones desk
3) Do some quick research on localization and see what might need to be
built for Collabbit to efficiently support language switches
4) Get some work done on creating an easy to install downloadable package
available on the collabbit.org site

I can start work on 1 & 2. Are there volunteers to help with 3 & 4 (and the
brochure, if you're handy with graphics and layout/)

Cheers,
Will

I can help with brochure design if you give me content to work with. Rails
localization is fairly easy, and we're already using it, somewhat, for all
of the flash messages that appear when you've performed an action. We're not
using it for all of the other in-interface text, but getting that
localizable wouldn't be too difficult.

The last bit is what worries me. We need to have a talk about what we mean
when we say 'downloadable package' for Collabbit. It's really not very hard
to get running right now. The hardest part, in my opinion, is setting up the
web and email servers. The rest is really quite easy. And if someone isn't
completely capable of doing server setup themselves, then they shouldn't be
hosting Collabbit: that's just begging for security issues. I really don't
know what would go into a downloadable package or how it would be expected
to perform. Is it expected to be one-click or a simple wizard or something
to set up Collabbit and a server? Because that very seriously worries me.
(And, also, means that most of the work isn't really at all
Collabbit-related.)

Now, if by downloadable package we mean something that's just meant to run
as a single instance rather than a collection of them, then yeah, this is
something we need to work on. But someone's going to have to have a pretty
convincing argument to get me to believe that making the entire setup of
Collabbit super-easy is actually a good idea.

All that I've meant is to host a downloadable package on the
collabbit.orgsite instead of bringing the person to github and asking
them to learn to
navigate around another person's site. I agree with you Sam that making it
too easy is really just opening everything up for security problems. I also
agree with you that it's setting up Collabbit to run as a single instance
rather than a collection of them.
