As a Cofsug-activity & also with the intention of continuing the Cofsug-tradition, we( seven of us ) had arranged a “BASIC UBUNTU WORKSHOP” for the SY-Comp/IT guys of Coep in our FOSS lab .

This workshop aimed to make the SY-guys comfortable with Ubuntu . The workshop was of @2.30 hrs bcoz we made the SY-guys immediately try out various things on Ubuntu , like the commands & even software-installation , customizations etc .

We repeated the same workshop for 3times , coz only 40-45 students could be accomodated in our FOSS lab & many of them were interested & inquistive to try their hands on Ubuntu .

All in all, the response was beyond our expectations & the workshop was a huge success . Now many of the SY-guys are excited to make their PC's dual-boot . So  we are planning to have “UBUNTU INSTALLATION FEST” very soon .

Here I have attached the PPT of the workshop .

Any suggestions are welcomed .

Hi,

Here are few points which I would like to put
forward from my past experiences

Next time kindly cover :
apt-cache search
and
apt-cache show
they are extremely important arguments to apt
which help you easily locate the package you are
looking for.

It would be great if you guys could cover the security
aspects involved in GNU/Linux systems. chmod and
chown are essential commands.
Read only file systems are a major problem which almost
everyone faces when they mount their drives. So I would
suggest the careful use of mount, umount and fsck be
introduced to newcomers.

When you speak about 'man' kindly show the students
on how to effectively use the sub numbers. Many students
are largely unaware of the correct use of man sub numbers
and it ends up confusing them.
eg :
man open  -> will display a man page elaborating the openvt
command which opens the virtual terminal.
whereas
man 2 open -> will display the open system call API.
This is extremely helpful while coding, specially when
functions from multiple languages exit. Please cover this
version of man next time.

Another bizarre thing I have noticed is many students use
root if they get the slightest error as a normal user. Kindly
discourage the frequent use of root in normal day working
as it compromises the security aspect of Linux.

A couple of other interesting commands which can be covered in
future sessions are :
1. screen
2. fortune
3. ifconfig
4. services
5. alias
6. find ( very few people know the efficient use of this command. It is extremely necessary to make the students comfortable with this command )

A couple of vim tricks you can showcase are :
1. Shift + >> : To indent sections of the code.

Command Line tricks :
Please display the magic of
crtl+r and history command they are extremely useful.

It would be splendid if one of the speakers could right a blog
about there experience, which in turn will help others organize
similar workshops in the future.

Thank You,
Hope this information was helpful.

Correcting grammatical mistake : "about there experience" -> "about their experience"

Thanks Shravan for your valuabe suggestions..!
It was just a introductory session..also due to time constraint we couldn't include many important points in such great detail.
But we will surely include your points in coming workshops round the year..

Also the idea of blog is very innovative and we will try implement it as soon as possible..

Thanks a lot..!

* Avoid typing in all capital letters, unless it is an acronym. Typing
in all caps means you are shouting it at everyone who is reading it.

* It is "Red Hat" and not "RED HAT" or "RedHat". Be consistent with
the name usage.

* Just because the template uses capital letters, doesn't mean you
should change the name! It is "CoFSUG", and not "COFSUG"! You do have
some slides (slide #14) where you use small letters in the title. Try
to be consistent.

* If you have copied a picture (slide #10) you will need to get
permission from the author to use it.

* Do a spell check in your presentation. "DIRECORIES" on slide #21.

* In slide #36, it is mentioned that there are 3 Package Management
Systems (PMS). AFAIK, there is only one. The others are just a wrapper
or an interface to the package management system.

* In slide #40, it is mentioned that vim has two modes. Actually, it
has more than that: insert, command, visual, command-line etc.

* Please put a revision number to your presentation. If you make
modifications, your users will not which is the new or old one.

* Please mention a license under which the content is made available
and whether other users can be modify/distribute the same.

I will suggest some institute level inaugural program as well, so that CoFSUG activities will no longer be only for CS and IT people. And also start with planning weekly meetings.

All the very Best for the New Team CoFSUG...

The notion of conducting an institute level inaug sounds promissing. Almost all the major clubs in the college conduct it. Looking forward to the inauguration. All the best new cofsug team.

1.)This is the 2nd version of our presentation for the SY-guys in our college. We have made some changes to it , like correcting spelling errror , changing the title( thanks to Richard Stallman ), changing “Linux” to “GNU/Linux” ( again, thanks to Richard Stallman ) etc .

In short, there is no major change with respect to the 1st version . But still lets dump the 1st version & use the 2nd one only .

2.)For those who dont have GNU/Linux OS , pls use the .pdf version .

3.)We wrote an email to both Richard Stallman & Linus Torvalds , to get their consent for use of their pictures in the presentation , as suggested by Shakti Kannan . Pls read the attached text-file for more details of our conversations .

4.)@Shakti Kannan : Could u help us in the “licensing” matter of our presentation ?? Is it really that necessary ?? By just mentioning : “Our presentation is released under GPLv3 ( or whatever ) & it may be changed/ modified by anyone subject to …..etc etc” are we done ?? Is this what is needed or some more things have to be done ??

Pls guide to us, as we are new to this “licensing” stuff .

5.)Finally, again, do comment/suggest on this 2nd version .

You don't need to give any explanation on the slides. Just mention the
license you wish to use.

In this context, if you wish to use GNU license in software, one will
need to follow this:

I'm surprised and delighted to see that RMS  communicated so much with you. I have heard that he does not have this much time!

Also, there is a strong need for everyone to see Shakhti's presentation on communication etiquettes. It is on his website.
