Hi

Welcome to Google Summer of Code! Google Summer of Code will be happening for its ninth year this year.

For those of you who don't know about GSoC, it is an innovative program dedicated to introducing students from colleges and universities around the world to open source software development. The program offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source projects with the help of mentoring organizations from all around the globe.

Please check out the blog post about the program and read the FAQs and Timeline on Melange for more information.

If interested, please fill out this form.

Note : GSoC is about contributing to an existing Open Source project (choose from among the list that will be published on the website) and NOT about making your own projects Open Source. Last year more than 1000 applications from India were rejected because people did not get the concept.

Thank you Apporva. Here's some of Debian projects which they have
proposed for this year GSOC

https://wiki.debian.org/SummerOfCode2013/Projects

and this gives the whole scope of GSOC with time-tables and everything.

https://wiki.debian.org/SummerOfCode2013

One of our friends Praveen who is on the mailing list has been a GSOC
mentor so feel free to ask any questions on this on-list.

<snipped>

Professionals can take part as mentors but that means your project
should be open-source and your project should be pre-approved by
google to take part in gsoc.

Here's a list of institutions which were selected by google for last
year's GSOC -

https://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/accepted_orgs/google/gsoc2012

The FAQ should clarify most of the doubts :-

https://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/document/show/gsoc_program/google/gsoc2013/help_page#1._How_does_a_mentoring_organization

That page has all the info.

Till l8er.

Can we have a session to discuss the process and guide interested students? I was a mentor in 2007 and I can help anyone interested to apply. I think all of you reading it should apply. Because applying itself is a learning process. Even if you don't get selected this time, its going to be a good experience.

Students who are interested in applying to various projects would want
to read <https://code.google.com/p/google-summer-of-code/wiki/AdviceforStudents>
and thereafter ask for clarifications.

Get in touch with the mentor of the project idea you intend to work
on, understand the scope of the problem and try to create a first
draft of a proposal with timelines and milestones. The earlier you do
that, the easier it is to have conversations around tweaking it to
turn it into a proposal that has a better chance of being a success.
Keep the conversation going with the project (via IRC, list) and your
mentor.

adding to that compiling the trunk of the project and doing some basic
or/and simple patches would also tell and share the seriousness of
your intent to the project developers as well.

Just to add, LTTng is there in GSoC this time [1] If anyone has any plans for taking up challenges in Linux kernel/user space tracing, this might be the time to get in action. Have a look at [2] and hang out on IRC in #lttng on OFTC. I am generally available there. If you are interested in dynamic user space tracing, talk to cbab/scientist on IRC directly or even me.

May the force be with you (Meh :-/ ..cliché! - who cares?)

You should be following the guidelines laid down by the organization
you are applying to and, attempt to put your proposal into the Melange
system as soon as you can. The later you do this, the higher are the
chances that the mentors will not have enough time to adequately
assess your proposal and timelines.
