Quiztronomy report

Hello all.

Quiztronomy 2013 conducted yesterday saw participation from 27 teams from colleges which included FC, SP, AISSMS, VIT and a lot of teams from COEP. The Director, Dr. Sahasrabuddhe was present. He addressed the gathering and spoke about playing by the rules. 

The elims was conducted by Sarang Karpate. The cutoff was 9 while the top score was 19 on 25. Two teams had tied for the sixth position to make it to the finals and the tie was resolved on the basis of star-marked questions. 

The final round was conducted in two parts- The theme round consisting of 7 questions connecting to the theme "The wonders of the solar system"; and the 36-questions infinite rebound round. The theme round was a written round which was conducted by Rohan Danait.

The first half of the final round was conducted by Omkar Yarguddi, while Payas Awadhutkar conducted the second half. The  results of the finals are as follows:

1. Varad Naik and Aniketh Rallabhandi
2. Rohit Chaoji and Albert Paul
3. Aditya Chandorkar

Teams 1 & 2 had tied for the first position each with a total score of 85 points. The tiebreaker was a different round in itself. 3 questions were asked of which the first was answered correctly by both, the second was not attempted while the third was not attempted by team 1 and was incorrectly answered by team 2. Therefore they received a -10 points penalty and team 1 won.

The prizes, trophies and certificates were distributed after which the members dispersed.

I would like to thank all members who were present and all those who could not be present due to certain pressing engagements. Special thanks to the FY members who were present in spite of having a test scheduled in the afternoon. Thanks also to Khaladkar ma'am for her inputs, encouragement and wholehearted support.

Hello everyone,

Firstly, congratulations to the team who put up the quiz- including the framing and execution. I read the report in parallel on the BCQC blog and the feel was that the team got it spot on and kept up the difficult tradition of trying to set a niche quiz for a non-niche audience. There was some apprehension in the inaugural years regarding this very conundrum and it's heartening to know that you have pulled it off.

You will find that we have set excellent, often entertaining elims (thus ensuring some kind of audience for the finals) and have been generous (thanks to the Gymkhana support) in the winnings given away. The finals fall short, due to the demands to trying to get the balance right between hard core astro and workability. I would only like to make a suggestion at this juncture- to compile all questions from previous years. Each set of quizmasters have surely their own questions- as spreadsheets, collaborative online documents etc. Please put them up on the group to remain as a reference for the coming years in ensuring that the idea of the quiz and its quality remains intact.

Good work. I was honestly sceptical that you could pull it off at such short notice. I'm happy that it worked out. Having said that, start earlier for next year, and have the quiz earlier. I understand that school participation was quite low, probably because of clashes with exam season. It's always been a difficult even to place in the calendar, and late Jan/ early Feb is probably the best time to have the quiz. You might also want to consider moving the quiz to first sem, so as  to completely eliminate board exam pressure. All in all, keep up the good work. I have gone ahead and shared all previous quizzes with Omkar. He should be able to share it with everyone who needs the sheets in the future.
