December CoderDojo in Dundalk

[CoderDojo Dundalk]

Dear Ninja's and Mentors,

The November CoderDojo is now available to book Here. We use a CoderDojo booking system so if this is your first time you to use it you (parent / guardian or mentor)  will need to register then you can add children if appropriate and book their tickets. Please select the user type that describes you best. 

Like last month we have increased the number of available tickets with some new exciting rooms again, I'd appeal to mentors to let me know / book mentor tickets asap so that we can plan the day accordingly. 

We will meet up in the usual room P1111 and then go to the individual rooms some of which have changed.

As this is the last Dojo of 2018 we will have a wee party (feel free to bring in some treats, I'll see if I can get some as well and we will of course have Pizza!!) with the presentation of wrist bands to those that have attended 4 or more Dojos we have the White one, if you already have a white one might consider upgrading to the yellow if you are up to completing a skill task !!!

For Scratch users we might try using the new Scratch 3 this time - its being launched in Jan 2019 but we can get a head start on it. If you wish you can bring in headphones as there are some new audio features in Scratch 3

Finally for the season that's in it festive jumpers and festive themes for Scratch etc would be most agreeable !!!!

Hi Tony,

I've been unable to get any info on it either, the most I got is that there is a session run in St Olivers (location of the previous DoJo) but its only for their students. Perhaps check with The Mill - I think they had one running at one stage. If you get any info will you let me know so that I can let others know.

Hi, Paul here - was helping run the Dojo at the Mill (centered on Financial Payments / the M1 Payments corridor).

At the moment the Mill Dojo is on-hold. Great and very supportive location, great group of Ninjas (mainly teenage) and technical skills, and was project based working towards a financial payments app. The missing piece was somebody to act as a client. Somebody (e.g. from a charity) to talk to the ninjas once a month and give them feedback and direction.

Without that direction, the Dojo would just be a duplicate of the One in Olivers School (which wouldn't be a good idea!).

Hi all,

 

Unfortunately Coderdojo Drogheda (in St. Olivers) is also on hold. 2 parents who where helping to organise it had work commitments which prevented them from participating on a Saturday. I've been hoping to restart the dojo, but I've my own time pressures.

 

Would some of the mentors in either Drogheda dojo be interested in meeting up some evening to see what makes sense to do next ? Maybe bringing the dojos together again ?

BTW: The Dojo in St Olivers is *not* restricted to any group of students, rather St Olivers school very kindly offered their facilites to us.

Hi Con etc al.

Yes, I think we should do something about this sad state of affairs - Drogheda has been one of the leaders of Coderdojo and it would be awful if we allowed it to sink without trace. I bumped into John Halpin (principal at Oliver's) and he expressed his desire to see it up & running again. 

Can anyone suggest a time & location? The Mill is mentioned below - that could be a good location.

Guys,

My bad here - I’ve been wrapped with guilt about not finding a replacement when Jayne had to stand back but with work and travel I have not had the time to even help to find parents/volunteers to help out again.

I can still volunteer 1-2 Saturdays a month but I can no longer find the time to do the admin - hopefully we could get some young volunteers and/or their parents to help with the logistics and emails.

It is relatively central for most of us and has a carpark(I'm not just being selfish :P).

I think admin help is the key. Most of the mentors abhor paperwork, so it could be something for one of the parents who just sits out in the front without participating?

Hi All,

Happy New Year, great that this discussion is going on, I can make the Monsterboice on Tues at 8pm. We started to use the zen.coderdojo meeting forum and it does cut down on the admin bit from using eventbrite. 

I can see if there is any support we can get from the Institute and I do know we have a few that are coming from the Drogheda area to DkIT for the Dojo. 

We are running once a month with circ 100 ninjas attending for the last few months.
