What the CodePlex foundation can do for o/s projects
|
| |
Hi Folks,
After Sam's talk at last month's Monospace conference in Austin TX,
I've given his questions some braincycles and I'd like to share those
with you.
1. What should the foundation focus on?
Well, I'm as biased as you can get, but personally, I believe the
foundation should focus on the .Net ecosystem.... more »

Wider audience

How many subscribers are there to this list? Can someone subscribe to a Google group without having a Google/gmail account? If not (not sure) we should really move this list to a platform where anyone can subscribe.. Where does disc...@codeplex.org go? Is that a public list, or does it just go to the BoD or something?... more »

Project Acceptance Guidelines
|
| |
I know the staff and Board of the CodePlex Foundation has been quiet
for a bit. We have, however, been hard at work. Today we have posted
the "Project Acceptance and Operations Guidelines", available on the
Foundation website and also uploaded here ([link]

Valuable resource CPF gives OSS: lawyers
|
| |
As an OSS developer myself, I couldn't care less about technical legalities (even if I am actually a lawyer) that typically concern big companies. I don't care about my project's IP and copyrights. I just want to develop cool, useful stuff for others to leverage/redist/enhance/whatev er. If CPF can free prospective corporate... more »

CodePlex.com tab belong on the CodePlex Foundation site?
|
| |
Since the CodePlex.com site remains the open source community site for
Microsoft open source contributions, it's confusing to have the
CodePlex.com link on the CodePlex Foundation site.
As I understand the two are separate and the foundation isn't taking
the .com site with it, shouldn't CodePlex.com either be removed or put... more »

Sustainable OSS: More than just code.
|
| |
In an OSS project, writing the code is the easy part. Creating sustainable OSS projects with lasting impact is much harder. Here are a few ways that a Foundation could help OSS projects remain viable. 1. Resources & Sponsorship. While there are many places one can host an OSS project, it is still sometimes difficult and expensive to obtain resources and tools required for... more »

Financial independence from MS
|
| |
I think an important goal for the foundation would be to become financially independent from MS as soon as possible (as the major contributor anyways). This would clear some concerns on its alignment (or not) with MS. One way to achieve this is to encourage and make it extremely easy for individuals to contribute, friction-free. A paypal account to send money to,... more »

2B or not to be?
|
| |
The better question might be what is to be? Before I say anything
else I want to state that I am very optomistic about the CPF coming to
be. I am not for or against any one schema for development or
products/projects related to them (include any acronym you wish
here). All depending on what I am working on at any given time I use... more »

CPF business plan -> OSS business plan
|
| |
Here is something that just pop up in my mind. Something that CPF can do for OSS projects is to build a business plan for them. Long term, viable, OSS projects make money for the people who use them. Labor of love may sustain a single committer, but not a team. Guiding projects into a viable business model that they can make money off... more »
