Are you sure it was a 404? A 404, as you know, is a response
from the web server indicating that it doesn't know what you're talking about. However, if you were experiencing transient network issues, i.e. some issue with wifi, then a browser like Internet Explorer gives extremely unhelpful messages so that you don't know whether it's an actual 404 from the web server or if it's a network issue. Google Chrome will show you the difference.
I'm wondering if 404 has become a metonym and people have forgotten its true meaning.
