I know that we have a lot of musicians in our community; is anyone
interested in bringing some instruments and possibly playing? I know
that I'll be bringing my guitar just to have with me.

Great idea, Corey!

You don't want me anywhere near an instrument, but if the response
here is positive I can check into getting one of the breakout rooms
set up with juice for electric guitars, basses, hedge trimmers, or
whatever else folks need.

I'd be interested in playing (electric guitar, bluesy through metal in terms of style), but I wouldn't be able to bring any of my gear since I'm flying in.

A note of personal related history:
Keyboards do not like juice. I've had to replace mine two or three times.

Is the thought in the area of a jam session, open mic, or what? I am without
a portable keyboard (my main instrument) at the moment.

Maybe I'll bring the concertina and penny whistle. Do they serve Guiness
there?

No clue what the musically inclined are thinking of for format, but
I'm fairly sure one of the bars there has Guiness!

I have a hollow body ibanez that I can bring. I play primarily
acoustic guitar, but I think we can accommodate everyone's style.

If I can get some practice time in between now and then, I'll bring either
my guitar or my bass. I have a keyboard, but it is too big and heavy.

Probably a jam session/open mic would be cool. I frequent the open
mics around the Cleveland area; I might be able to lug out a PA and
microphone, if I can find a friend's larger car to borrow.

If we can find a place that will allow us to drink at the same time, I
think we could make a pretty good party out of it. I know that there
is a tradition of jam fests at Tech Ed, and the Agile conference had
one in 1994. If it works out at codemash, maybe we could start our
own.

This could be fun, I'm hardly good enough to perform for anyone, but I
would sure like to listen. I fully expect generous amounts of filk to
be involved, maybe someone can get up to the mic and freestyle some
nerdcore?

My freestyle nerd core isn't family friendly. Sorry. That is the problem with nerd core. The nerd rappers tend to curse... A LOT.

Bring your instrument, anyway. I can't imagine that we are going to be
"performing," as much as sitting around jamming. Everyone is good
enough for that. :)

Hey, I play drums (pretty well too). I'd love to jam out to some nerd
core; i like funk drumming. Anyway, I'll talk the wife wife into
letting me bring the minivan and it'll take me back to the "band
touring days". :)

This will be fun! I'm thinking we're gonna need some video feeds for
this event. :) Somebody should write a CodeMash song and we'll all
wing it. :)

Just ideas...

No, I'm coming from the Columbus area. I'll just bring the basics and
not my whole get-up (basics include: snare, 2 mounted toms, 1 floor
tom, kick bass, hi-hat, 2 crash's, & ride) I'll bring my woodblock and
cowbell too. :) Where/when should we meet to discuss details? I'm
gettin' all excited! :D

You had to mention it. And me being an incorrigible filker and all.....
Here's my ever so humble submission:

"Coder Mash"
TTTO: Monster Mash
Words by Matt Williams, 20071204
(Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution License)

I was working on my code late one night
When my eyes beheld an eerie sight
For my server's access logs began to rise
And suddenly to my surprise

It did the mash
It did the coder mash
The coder mash
It was a hacker smash
It did the mash
It caught on like a flash
It did the mash
It did the coder mash

>From my laboratory in the college east
To the left coast bayside where the hackers feast
The geeks all came from their enterprise jobs
To get a jolt from mad doctor dobbs

They did the mash
They did the coder mash
The coder mash
It was a hacker smash
They did the mash
It caught on like a flash
They did the mash
They did the coder mash

The wilfers were having fun
The party had just begun
The guests included Neil Ford
Scott Preston and "old Chris Judd"

The scene was rockin', all were digging the talks
Ruby on Rails, Python, groovy grails rock
The Android-builders were about to arrive
And the famous group, "The Silverlight Five"

They played the mash
They played the coder mash
The coder mash
It was a hacker smash
They played the mash
It caught on like a flash
They played the mash
They played the coder mash

Out from his session, Scott's voice did ring
Seems he was troubled by just one thing
He looked on the net and shook his fist
And said, "Whatever happened to my power user's tool list?"

It's at the mash
It's at the coder mash
The coder mash
And it's a hacker smash
It's at the mash
It's caught on like a flash
It's at the mash
It's at the coder mash

Now everything's cool, Scott's a part of the band
And the coder mash is the hit of the land
For you, the hackers, this mash was meant too
When you get to code mash, tell them Jim Holmes sent you

Then you can mash
Then you can coder mash
The coder mash
And do my hacker smash
Then you can mash
You'll catch on like a flash
Then you can mash
Then you can coder mash

Your song is WAY better than mine. You win on accessibility alone.

I love CodeMash - to the tune of Madonna's I Love New York.

I don't like conferences
but I like codemash
other meetings
make me feel like trash

Comdex is for people who like to sleep
the boring cobolfest, baby you can keep

Other conferences sometimes make me mad
other places tend to make me sad
no other conference can make me glad
except codemash
I love codemash

if you don't like my attitude
then you can write whitespace code
or go to the extreme
and write b.f. in c-mode

codemash is not for little kiddies who script
if you can't stand the heat, then get off of my street

Other conferences sometimes make me mad
other places tend to make me sad
no other conference makes me glad
except code mash
I love code mash

Since it's the thing to do:

What A Wondeful CodeMash
=====================

I see Pythons of green ... Red Rubies too
I see them run ... for me and for you
And I think to myself, I'll give it a whirl

I see Monsters of Blue ... Macs of white
Bright hackers code ... Drinking all night
And I think to myself, I'll give it a whirl

All the different logos ... on screens they fly
Are also on the swag ... of Vendors going by
I see sales men pitching products ... saying how do you do?
They're realling saying ... I'm selling to you.

I hear zealots cry ... I watch them grow
They'd learn much more .. if they'd just let go
And I think to myself ... I'll give it a whirl
Yes I think to myself ... I'll give it a whirl

Ruby, C, dot netters are fine
Remember me to one who codes there
He once was a true friend of mine

Tell him to code me a jvm stack
Ruby, C, dot netters are fine
Without C++ nor a byte-op code
And then he'll be a true friend of mine

Tell him to create a new paradigm
Ruby, C, dot netters are fine
Which blends agile and waterfall minds
And then he'll be a true friend of mine

Tell him to perform a webserver feat

Which runs within a half K so neat
And then he'll be a true friend of mine

I like to code to trance music occasionally. Its usually light on lyrics and repetitive.

To the tune of Fonzirelli's Moonlight Party (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqM1FXGNDX0 ):

Codemash moonlight party:

Programming in moonlight,
Coding until sunrise.
I'm not leaving from the keyboard.

I sang this to my daughter nearly all day on Sunday. She likes the tune.

ok, i just reread this and it sounds like i'm talking myself up
here... it's not my intention. :P really, i'm not _that_ good, i guess
i should have said "i can keep a steady beat and improvise when
needed". :D

anyway, where/when should we get together with all of this? I'm coming
from columbus wednesday night, but have some obligations with setting
up my booth for exhibiting hours and have some other things I'll be
doing. I'll need to check my schedule for free time, but i'm very
interested in some ad hoc jammin. i would like to make it clear that I
don't really want my drumset to be accessible to the entire public as
a 'free for all' set... i've done that before and don't want to do it
again. Of course I don't mind if people play it, but i will not be
leaving it setup for all to play whenever they want. (just putting
that out there). :)

anyway, we can start a new thread or keep this one going, but i'd like
to know what to expect with this as far as when and where we'll be
setting up and so on...
