Subject: Proposal to host code4lib2010 - Bloomington, IN
Indiana University Libraries propose hosting Code4Lib 2010 in
Bloomington, IN. We meet all the requirements, as outlined below:

Requirements of a Hosting Site:

* A host or hosts willing to manage local arrangements (many colleges
and
universities are skilled at facilitating conferences)

The Libraries have a long track record in hosting workshops and
conferences.  The Indiana Memorial Union (one of the largest student
union buildings in the world) is located on the IU campus and has the
Biddle Hotel and Conference Center (http://www.imu.indiana.edu/hotel/
index.shtml), with a large auditorium and a number of breakout spaces.
There are a number of new or newly remodeled hotels/motels nearby,
including Crowne Plaza, Marriott Courtyard, Comfort Inn, and the
Hilton Garden Inn.  There are more than 2200 hotel rooms in
Bloomington.

The IU Conferences Office (http://www.conferences.indiana.edu/
conferences/) regularly organizes workshops and conferences for
professional associations and other groups, and can handle the
logistics of registration, hotel accommodations, parking, and meals.
They regularly work with local hotels and can usually provide
favorable discounts for conference attendees. The IU Libraries local
planning committee will work with the IU Conference Office to provide
local support for the event and will provide sponsorship at a level of
$2500.

* An auditorium or similar space suitable for 150-200 persons, plus
three or
more "breakout" rooms for 30-50.

The Indiana Memorial Union has a large auditorium, the Whittenberger
Auditorium, which can hold up to 300 participants, as well as a number
of small- and medium-sized breakout rooms for groups ranging from 5-10
or 30 – 50 to 50-75.  The costs for use of these rooms, technologies,
and meals are very reasonable.  Whittenberger Auditorium will cost
$300 per day and Alumni Hall (which is most often used for meals)
would cost $600 plus a food and beverage minimum of $1000.  Use of the
meeting rooms is usually provided at a greatly reduced cost when hotel
rooms and meals are also part of the conference package.

* Wireless network available to attendees free or sponsored by the
conference

Wireless connectivity can be arranged at the proposed conference
venues at no cost to conference attendees.

Additional Desirable Qualities:

* Small college or university town (why? "amenities", my friend,
amenities)

Music, art, dance, sports, ethnic food — it's all here, nestled in a
serene Midwest city surrounded by natural beauty. Bloomington,
Indiana, is the quintessential college town, and was named by USA
Today as one of the country's top 10 college towns. It has several
streets filled with interesting restaurants within easy walking
distance of the Indiana Memorial Union.  The multi-cultural attitude
of Indiana University has spilled over into the local restaurant
scene. From down-home Hoosier cooking to a plethora of ethnic
cuisines, Bloomington has become a restaurant-lover’s dream.  African,
Asian, Irish, Italian Mediterranean, Mexican, Moroccan, Tibetan, Thai,
Turkish – you name it, Bloomington’s got it. Bloomington has recently
been recognized by Orbitz Travel Research as the "7th fastest growing
destination in the country for wine and culinary enthusiasts!"
National Geographic recently named Bloomington one of the top 50
Adventure Towns in the nation. Home to the state’s largest inland
lake, only National forest, and a variety of city and county parks,
Bloomington visitors have access to hiking, fishing, boating, biking,
kayaking, hot air ballooning and more.  The city is safe for walkers,
bikers and drivers and there are several athletic facilities nearby
for fast workouts.  City and campus buses and inexpensive taxis are
available.

Bloomington presents wonderful music (much of it emanating from our
world-class music school), entertaining speakers, great bars, and
local and national bookstores as well.

our own wiki Bloomingpedia - http://www.bloomingpedia.org

* Reasonably near a major airport (we are prepared to interpret this
liberally if the other qualifications are strong)

Bloomington is served by the new Indianapolis International Airport,
opened in November 2008, about 40 miles away.  Passengers flying into
and out of Indianapolis International Airport are served by 12
airlines. On average, there are 180 daily departures, 39 of which are
nonstop from Indianapolis to major U.S. destinations. Competitive
airfares, easy access, and one of the nation’s best on-time records
attract 8 million passengers annually.  For more information, see:
http://www.indianapolisairport.com/
A top notch bus service from the airport (the Bloomington Shuttle
Service) stops at regularly scheduled times at the Indiana Memorial
Union and many of the local hotels.  There is also a limousine service
that provides door to door access from all hotels to the airport.

*Good evening venues (e.g., interesting and/or good restaurants and
bars)

Bloomington has excellent music, theaters, and a lively student bar
scene as well as places for more mature visitors.  As noted above,
Bloomington is known for its variety of restaurants, including ethnic,
fusion and vegetarian offerings.  Most of these are within a 15 minute
walk from the campus, or, in cold weather, a short bus or cab ride
away.
The world-renowned Jacobs School of Music provides musical activities
nearly every day of the week.  Many local musicians liven up the local
music venues around town with a variety of musical styles.

* Some distance away from the last conference site, all things being
equal
(to spread the travel pain)

Bloomington is about 970 miles away from Providence RI, the 2009 site.
Temperatures in February are slightly warmer than in Rhode Island with
an average high of 42 and an average low of 23.  There is some snow in
this month, but Bloomington averages less than 3 inches of
precipitation for the entire month of February.

The best weeks for access to all the best meeting rooms:
Week of Feb. 15
Week of Feb. 22

Thank you for your consideration of our proposal,

Robert McDonald (Indiana University)
Gary Charbonneau (Indiana University)
