Dear Code4Lib Conference Planners,
We propose that Brown University, located in Providence, Rhode Island,
host the 2009 code4lib conference.
Providence is a beautiful city, with an abundance of historic
architecture, fabulous restaurants, music, theatre, and shopping
within easy walking and trolley distance of the Brown campus and
downtown hotels. In addition to Brown, Providence is home to the Rhode
Island School of Design and Trinity Repertory Company. There is a
vibrant geek community - http://www.providencegeeks.org/
Transportation:
T.F. Green Airport (PVD)
Only ten minutes from downtown Providence, Warwick's T.F. Green
Airport offers more than 160 direct flights via major carriers. T.F.
Green was named one of the "Top Five Alternative Airports" in the
country by Forbes magazine.
Amtrak
Providence is located on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor between
Washington DC/New York City and Boston.
Via Automobile
Located at the intersection of I-95 and I-195, Providence is 50 miles
from Boston (about a one hour car ride) and 185 miles from New York
City (about three hours by car).
Accommodations & Meeting Space:
Providence has over 35 hotels. The Hilton Providence has just
completed a multi-million dollar renovation. The hotel has 274 rooms,
an indoor pool and health club, free high speed internet, restaurants,
bar, Starbucks. The Hilton has 6020 sq. ft of meeting space; see
capacity charts -
http://www.hilton.com/en/hi/hotels/meeting_space.jhtml?ctyhocn=3DPVDPRHF.
According to TravelPost.com "prices generally start at $89 per night"
but standard published rates are $169 per night. There are several
other hotels with suitable meeting space including the Westin and the
Biltmore. Other technology conferences held or scheduled to be held
in Providence include ASIS&T (11/2004), Nercomp (3/2008), and Digital
Library Federation Fall Forum (11/2008). The Westin was/is the site
for these conferences. Published rate is $169 per night. The Westin
is directly connected to the Providence Place Mall with 170 stores (an
Apple Store is the newest edition).
Weather in February:
Average Low: 22=B0
Average High: 39=B0
Average Precipitation: 3.45 in.
Record Low: -7=B0 (1979)
Record High: 72=B0 (1981)
