Subject: How many keynote speakers for 2013?

Hey All,

The top 3 for keynote speakers are Cory Doctorow, Tim Berners-Lee and Adam
Mayer. How many keynotes do we want for this year and how much/many can we
afford in terms of travel lodging and perhaps honorarium?

I seem to remember someone (pberry?) saying in IRC that Doctorow would
be nowhere near Chicago during c4lcon. Probably worth doublechecking.

Yeah, we still have to ask the keynotes if they would be available and
willing to speak at the event.  We just need some idea of what to say and
offer in the letter.

Some/all of those people will definitely turn you down, happens every
year. I doubt you'll get T B-L either.

Aren't there still 4 more days to vote?

I had Sept. 14th marked on my calendar, but I probably missed an email.
It would still be good to know how many keynote speakers we want and can
afford for this year.

Sounds like you need that info from the conf hosts?

Only conf hosts know 'afford'.  I guess everyone can have an opinion on
'want', but in the end someone should just decide, and make sure it
matches how many programs are desired/scheduled.

In general, my impression is that code4libbers are quite happy with
fewer keynotes rather than more (like 2 or even 1 rather than 3), to
leave more time for programs and breakouts etc.

Cool. Probably should have made that into 2 separate emails. Given the
speakers in the current top 3, we may be lucky to even get 1 keynote.

In the past, I think the 4th or 5th or 6th top vote-getters have been
resorted to to get an acceptance. That's okay. (You don't need to tell
them they were 6th choice. :) ).

I quite liked the 2 last year but that may have been a function of the
actual speakers than the format. If we can get two (I am keen to snag
any one of these 3 but doubt very much it will actually happen)

That said and unless the planning people say otherwise I'd say go for two.

As for how much is available I'd say fly them and give them hotel
accommodations. The honorarium for both unless someone funds it will
be a sum of $500.

I also think it'd be fantastic is we stop naming names going forward
so however is picked only thinks they lost to Sir Tim Berners-Lee,
Cory Doctorow and Adam Mayer. ;-)

Cheers,
./fxk

I personally like two keynotes as well. I'm pretty sure the program
committee could adjust the schedule/timeline if we ended up with one
keynote speaker instead.

My interjecting two cents.

Seems pretty standard to have an opening and closing keynote. I think
that's a good number. Otherwise, just opening keynote I think works too.
(I'm certain the program committee can come up with something... maybe a
session of pirate jokes!)
