Having researched the issue, the applicant found that some of the difficulties identified with the use of coir was due to the fact that the coir typically used in growth media was coir dust with the small particle sizes discussed previously. It is thought that the use of coir with small particle size (such as coir dust having a particle size of 0-2 mm) leads to problems as these materials are typically materials that densely pack leading to reductions in the air porosity of the blend.

What do members of the Group think of patent applications such as this one. There has been research and application of coir based growth mediums for decades and a number of different products are for sale. The granting of this application will cause problems in the future. Still, I suppose anyone can try to patent anything.
