Gov't moving to stem Lethal Yellowing Disease

BY CANDIESE LEVERIDGE Online reporter Lever...@jamaicaobserver.com

Wednesday, February 01, 2012

EXPERTS from the Coconut Industry Board have been conducting research to stem the Lethal Yellowing Disease, which affects coconut trees.

At the first Jamaica House press briefing by the People's National Party administration, Dr Wayne Myrie, from the Coconut Industry Board explained the nature of the research.

"We have looked at how to stem the spread of this disease and we have been embarking on a programme to remove the infected trees from the field immediately, to burn those trees and plant another tree in the space of that one and also to do proper control practices. We have found, and we call that the Black Approach, because the first person to start this approach is Michael Black in St Thomas," he said.

Myrie says a variety of coconut trees resistant to the disease have been developed and are being made available on a limited basis to farmers.

Dear Devappa,
We do not have Ganoderma Wilt reported in our country but there is an
epidemy of Stem bleeding caused by /Thielaviopsis paradoxa. /I recomend
you to try to identify the fungus, they are complete different and with
luck in the case of Ganoderma you may find the formation of reddish
brown fruiting bodies up to 50 cm in diameter, so one cannot miss it!
Using a Bordeaux mixture very heavy with lime is giving good results in
controlling stem bleeding in Brazil.
