<<2011 carte postale guadeloupe.jpg>> Dear all,

I received this postcard from my family taking holidays in Guadeloupe.

Any comments from the specialists of coconut varieties ? I mean, I know
what it is, but can other researchers confirm it ?

Two hypothesis: this variety was introduced recently in Guadeloupe, or
(more probable), the printer took a picture from another country to sell
it in Guadeloupe...

Kind regards

Roland

But in West Africa they might be recognised as Cameroon Dwarf, in East Africa as kitamli or Pemba Dwarf, in Tahiti as haari papua  and in Papua New Guinea there is a spicata form in the Madang region (unless killed by the recently reported phytoplasma disease). In Indonesia it was described under the name kalapa raja almost 300 yeas ago.

Roland, since Guadeloupe is one of the 27 regions of France (being an overseas region) and an integral part of the Republic it might be possible for you to access historical agricultural information on their coconuts.

For instance,
perhaps the descendants of Tamil sugar cane or pineapple farm workers in Guadeloupe introduced it. Maybe it is mentioned in published reports like Dash, J.S. (1922) Insectes et maladies. Rep. Sta. Agr. Guadeloupe 1920-21, 14-16. This might be a useful place to start searching, because the date is significant. At that time the British introduced a different dwarf (from Malaya) to Caribbean Islands like St Lucia and Trinidad and the French might have done something similar from somewhere like Pondicherry or Cochin China?

More recently, in the 1960s, the Guadeloupe farmers will have heard about a red dwarf being resistant to coconut lethal yellowing in Jamaica. Surely the IRHO will have made a report on the francophone Caribbean countries?

But after all that, your hypothesis
that a printer took a picture from another country is very likely. I have a postcard, sent from Los Angeles a few years ago, showing red Malayan Dwarf?

Best wishes

Hugh

Hi Roland

Moving away from the mystery dwarf of Guadeloupe, I have just unearthed among my reprints a copy of an article “Coconut Varieties” by Leslie Wishard of Kamuela, Hawaii describing a collection of exotic varieties assemble by himself in Hawaii in the 1960s and 1970s. The article was published in The Bulletin of Pacific Tropical Botanic Garden in Hawaii in 1978 Vol 8(2), pages 33-39. Twenty five acquisitions are described. The collection is located at the Kahanu Gardens at Hana, Maui, Hawaii.
