Dear Cobirders,
I headed out to look for Loons today (11/7) considering that
sometime in the past two evenings, a large number seem to have
appeared on the Front Range. I quickly relocated one pale Loon on
Lagerman Reservoir. This Loon almost looked good for juvenile Yellow-
billed (almost, except it had no auricular patch and bill didn't look
quite right &c) so, as I walked around the reservoir to get the Sun at
my back, I called Nathan Pieplow and Bill Schmoker. It turned out to
be a false alarm, since when I arrived on the south side of the
reservoir, the number of Loons doubled and definitely weren't Yellow-
billed Loons. I would certainly recommend stopping by Lagerman if you
are in the area, since these two Common Loons were easy to study, even
in binoculars. The rest of the reservoir had typical late Fall
species but relatively few Ducks. One late Killdeer rounded out the
list.
Cheers,
