Hey again,

Another potentially useful resource I've stumbled across on the internet:  a fellow by the name of Eric Haas runs a website called redoveryellow.com.

Notably, he has taken pictures of every railroad signal along several rail corridors, the LA-Seattle Coast Starlight corridor included.  These pictures could be a valuable asset for anyone wanting to get a better feel of the Coast Starlight route or for analysis of current track infrastructure (especially regarding locations and configuration of tracks and sidings).

As an example, shown below is CP Raymer in Van Nuys, one of the major chokepoints that we identified in our Coast Starlight improvement report.  Amtrak, Metrolink, Caltrans, and LOSSAN also consider this to the major constraint to capacity between Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo.

Enjoy!

Hey, that's in my neighborhood! Van Nuys Station is my local Amtrak
station. The steel tank you see in the background is where Mission
Tortillas' plant is.

There is more than enough room to add more track there.

Im guessing the photo is taken from the Bridge. That was built back
when Busch Gardens had their park there.

Since this picture was taken. The second switch has been removed. And
there another set of switches just at the the 405fwy overpass.
That was also removed. The switches was used to allow UP Freights to
enter and exit from the west/north.

Anyways. I was at the LOSSAN Board Meeting at MTA HQ yesterday. And
they officially introduced Eugene Skoropowski as the Project Manager
for all of the work. That is going to be started along the LOSSAN
Corridor. And he did stand up and discussed what he and his team will
be doing for the corridor.

I also got the Agenda from the LOSSAN Meeting. And they have project
start date in OCT-2010 for starting to add the second platform at Van
Nuys. And the double track between Raymer and Bernson.

All the pictures from Mr. Haas' photosets appear to be taken from the rear coach car of the Coast Starlight.

That is great news about Gene Skoropowski!  It's good to have him back in California.

Hopefully the Van Nuys 2nd Platform and Bernson-Raymer 2nd Main Track Projects don't get axed again like last year.  Schwarzenegger only let rail projects directly related to the HSR project be part of California's application for federal rail funds.  The rumor is that this year, he will similarly only allow projects in the LA-Anaheim corridor compete for federal funds.  Luckily, Metro, Metrolink, and Caltrans are pushing back to make sure these important projects get funded.

(The Van Nuys 2nd Platform project is also a Prop 1B project and we still have seen a cent of those funds...)

From what I heard yesterday at the meeting. The FRA made California
put the those
projects back on the list. or they wouldnt give any money to the HSR.
Saying it was
unfair. At least, that is the impression I got.

I second that comment about Gene Skoropowski. Under his leadership,
the Capitol Corridor became one of the most successful intercity rail
lines in the nation. Now it's time for him to work his magic on the
LOSSAN Corridor.
