Situation 1: Waking Up
It is Monday morning, Robert's mom comes into his room and wakes him up
M:Robert, wake up. It's seven o'clock.
R:Oh, mom. Can't I sleep a little longer?
M:No. You have to catch the bus at seven forty-five.
R:Okay, I'll get up.
M:That's a good boy. I'll get breakfast ready while you take a shower.
R:Is anyone in the bathroom?
M:No, you can shower right now.
R:Great. What's for breakfast?
M:I haven't decided yet. You just take your shower, brush your teeth and hair,
and I'll take care of the food.
R:All right. I'll come downstairs in fifteen minutes.
M:Ten minutes would be better.
R:I'll hurry but I can't promise.
M:But you might miss the bus if you wait too long.
R:You're right, mom. I'll be down in ten minutes.
M:That's a good boy. Hurry up.
R:Hey, mom, can you make waffles for breakfast?
M:I can't promise, but if you hurry I might make them.
R:For waffles, I'll always hurry.

Situation 2: Breakfast
Robert: Coming downstairs and sitting at the table. Mom, breakfast smells great.
What is it?
Mom: It's waffles, just like you wanted.
R: Thanks, mom. You're the best.
M: Yes, but only when I make what you want to eat.
R: Mom, you know that's not true.
M: I know. I was only joking. I also made you some sausage and orange
juice.
R: Perfect. How did you know sausage and waffles were my favorite?
M: Robert, I'm your mother. I know everything about you.
R: Not everything.
M: Oh, really? What don't I know?
R: Well, you don't know I am on the basketball team at school.
M: The what?
R: The basketball team. I'm on the team and I am playing forward.
M: Does your father know about this?
R: No. And he doesn't have to know. If you don't tell him...
M: Robert, you know I have to tell him. He's your father.
R: Yeah, but mom you know he won't understand.
M: Yes he will. You just have to explain it to him.
R: No, he won't. He just wants me to study. He doesn't like sports at all.
M: Yes he does. He plays golf.
R: Mom, golf is not a sport. It is a game for old people.
M: Be careful. I play golf, too.
R: I know. I just mean it's not a sport like basketball.
M: Oh, here comes your father now. We'll tell him.
R: Do we have to?
M: Yes.

Situation 3: Talking to Dad
Robert's dad comes downstairs and joins Robert and his mom at the table.
Mom: Good morning, dear.
Robert: Good morning, dad.
Dad: Good morning, you two. What were you just talking about?
R: Nothing.
M: Robert, tell your father what you just told me.
D: What's that, Robert?
R: Well, it's really nothing, but I am playing a little basketball after
school these days.
M: Robert, it's more than just a little basketball.
D: Which is it, a little or more?
R: Dad, I'm on the basketball team. Isn't that great?
D: I'm not sure. You know how I feel about you playing sports and not
studying.
R: But I'm studying, dad, I promise.
D: I still don't like the idea of you playing when you should be doing
schoolwork.
R: But I can do both. I can play sports and do my schoolwork.
D: Are you sure?
R: Yes.
D: What do you think, dear?
M: I think we should give him a chance. If he can keep good grades in
school while playing basketball, then we should let him play. But if his grades
are bad, he will have to quit the team.
R: Yeah, dad, that's fair.
D: Well, it sounds okay. Let's give it a try. But if you don't do your
schoolwork, you're off the team. Do you understand?
R: Yes, thanks mom, you're great.
M: Your father said yes, too.
R: Oh, yeah, thanks dad.
M: Robert, you'd better go. You'll be late for your bus.
R: OK, I'm going. Thanks for breakfast.
M: Hurry up.
R: Bye.
M: Bye, see you tonight.

Situation 4 Mom and Dad Have a Talk
Mom: He sure is growing up fast.
Dad: Tell me about it. He seems to change every month.
M: What do you think about him playing team basketball? I'm worried that
he'll neglect school and get too involved in athletics and all the other
distractions that come with playing sports.
D: Oh, I don't know. I know I sounded negative about it just now with
Robert, but actually, I'm happy he's playing. I played sports from middle school
on and it didn't hurt my grades.
M: Are you serious? You were lucky to graduate from high school!
D: I got good grades at university. Besides, kids should get more out of
middle and high school than books and tests.
M: But this is the age where he will develope most of his habits; both good
and bad. What if he ends up liking sports more than school?
D: So what? You say that as if it is the end of the world. When I was his
age all I cared about was sports and girls and look at me; I turned out just
fine.
M: That is because you didn't have any luck at either sports or girls and
realized you had better study when you went to college.
D: Careful! When you say i didn't have any luck with women that could mean
I was unlucky to have married you.
M: All right, I'll admit that after you entered university you got your act
together. But, what are we going to do about Robert?
D: Nothing. As it it, he is doing fine in school and so we will give him a
chance and see if he can handle both basketball and his studies. Who knows? We
may have a future NBA star for a son.

Situation 5 On the School Bus
Robert goes outside and catches the bus. His friend Billy is already on the bus.
Robert: Hey, Billy. What's up?
Billy: Hey, Bobby. How are you?
R: My name is Robert, not Bobby.
B: And my name is William, but everybody calls me Billy.
R: Well, that's you, not me. Please call me Robert from now on.
B: Okay, Bob.
R: Very funny. I'm going to start calling you William.
B: No, I hate that name. I promise to call you Robert if you promise not to
call me William.
R: I promise. You see how easy that was. Hey, are you going to pratice
today?
B: Pratice? What pratice?
R: Basketball pratice, of course.
B: I almost forgot. Yeah, I'm going. What about you? Did your dad give your
permission?
R: Yep, can you believe it? The old man is not so bad.
B: I think your dad is really cool. He's way better than my dad.
R: That's what you think, but it's not true. He only wants me to study, but
my mom helped me so now I can play sports too.
B: What about your grades?
R: I promised that I would get good grades.
B: What if you don't?
R: If I don't, then I have to quit the basketball team.
B: I know you'll be studying hard this year.
R: Yes, I will. I like basketball enough to make me want to study hard.
B: Yeah, school is not so bad if you can both study and play.

Situation 6 Basketball
David is sitting behind Robert and wants to talk about basketball.
David: I heard you guys talking about basketball. Who do you think is the
greatest player ever?
Robert: That's easy. It's Michael Jordan.
D: I don't think so. I think it Shaquille O'Neal.
R: What?! Shaq? Jordan is way better than Shaq!
D: No way. Jordan has more fancy moves, but Shaq is better.
R: Are you crazy? Shaq is just big and that is all. Jordan is a beeter
shooter. He has better defense. He is more fun to watch. And he has won more
championships. How do you say Shaq is better?
D: I don't know.
R: What do you mean, you don't know?
D: I mean I don't know much about basketball, I just heard my older brother
saying Shaq was the best.
R: You don't know much about basketball and you are fighting with me. Are
you on a basketball team?
D: No. I'm in a chess club.
R: Chess club?! Then you should talk about chess and not basketball.
D: Sorry. Hey, do you like chess?
R: I hate it. It's the most boring game on earth.
D: You shouldn't say that. It's very fun.
R: Okay, I'm sorry. I promise not to talk about chess if you promise not to
talk about basketball.
D: Okay, I promise.

Situation 7 First Period
Robert's first period of the day is English class, his teacher is Mr. Hubbard.
Mr. Hubbard: Good morning, class.
Class: Good morning, Mr. Hubbard.
H: Did all of you have a fun weekend? How about you, Robert, how was your
weekend?
Robert: It was pretty good.
H: Robert, this is an English language class, please speak a little more.
Tell us all about what you did on Saturday and Sunday.
R: Let's see. On Saturday, I went out to dinner.
Robert stops and doesn't say anything more.
H: Would you tell the class and me where you went out to dinner what you
ate?
R: Yes. I went to T.G.I. Friday's with my parents and my friend Tommy. I
had a steak with french fries and Tommy had spaghetti. After dinner we both had
a big ball of icecream for dessert. And then we played vedio games, and then...
Mr. Hubbard thinks that Robert will never stop talking and so stops him.
H: Thank you, Robert. That's enough.
R: But I thought you wanted to hear everything, I have a lot more to tell
you.
H: No. That will be fine. Class, please open your books to page fifty-six.
Today we are going to talk about...
Robert interrupts Mr. Hubbard.
R: But Mr. Hubbard, I still have a lot to say.
H: Good. Then you can tell me what you thought of the story on page
fifty-six.
R: I didn't read it. I was busy.
H: Busy? Busy eating icecream?
R: No, busy praticing basketball. I am on the team.
H: I don't care. All I care about is if you do your English homework or
not. I think I'll have to call your parents.
R: No, please don't.
H: Why not?
R: I promise my parents I would get good grades if they let me play
basketball.
H: Well then you will have to study hard or I will call them next time.
R: Thank you so much. I will study hard. I promise.

Situation 8 Second Period
Robert's second period of the day is a computer class. His teacher is Mrs.
Cross.
Cross: Class, please sit down.
Robert: Mrs. Cross, can I go to the bathroom?
C: Of course not. You just had a five minute break. Why didn't you go then?
R: I was busy getting ready for this class.
C: You should have been ready for this class last night. You will just have
to wait.
R: Okay, but can I show you my homework first?
C: Yes, of course you can.
Robert takes the CD out of his backpack
R: I made a computer game called Space Killer.
C: How do you play it?
R: You are flying in a spaceship and you have to fight against aliens.
C: How do you win?
R: You can't ever kill all the aliens, but whoever gets the most points
wins.
C: And how do you score points?
R: You score points by killing aliens? You get one point per alien and ten
points for destroying an alien ship.
C: That sounds very violent.
R: No. It's just fun. And most computer games now are much more violent
than this one.
C: Well then, let's see if it works.
Robert takes his CD and puts it into a CD-ROM Drive.
C: Wow, that looks great. You did a good job. I'm giving you an "A".
R: Thanks, Mrs. Cross.

Situation 9 Recess 1
After his computer class, Robert gets a fifteen minute break that is called
"recess".
Billy: Hey, Robert. How were your classes?
Robert: They were great. My English teacher, Mr. Hubbard, gave me a second
chance to do my homework, and my computer teacher, Ms. Cross, really liked the
computer game I made.
Billy looks a little sad.
B: I wish I could say the same. My history teacher hates me. He says he is
going to call my dad so I can't play basketball.
R: Who is your history teacher?
B: Mr. Cranston.
R: Oh yeah. I had him last year. He was really mean.
B: Yes. He still is really mean. He knows how much I like sport and still
he is going to call my dad.
R: Maybe not.
B: What do you mean?
R: I mean last year I had this same problem.
B: What did you do?
R: I wrote an extra report and he agreed not to call my parents.
B: Do you think he'll do that for me?
R: I don't know, but you should try.
B: You're right. I'll ask him. Hey, let's go talk to some girls.
R: Good idea.

Situation 10 Recess 2
Robert and Billy find Michelle.
Robert: Hey, there's Michelle. Why don't you go talk to her?
Billy: I'm shy. You talk to here. I'll listen.
R: What? It was your idea to talk to girls.
B: I know. But now I'm scared.
R: You chicken. Okay, I'll talk to her. Watch and learn.
Robert begins talking to Michelle and while Billy listens and laughs.
R: Hey, Michelle. What's up?
Michelle: Nothing much, what's up with you?
R: Nothing. Oh, but I made the basketball team.
M: Cool. What position do you play?
R: I play forward. I could play guard, but I'm tall so the coach wants me
to play forward.
M: I don't really know the difference between guard and forward, but it's
great that you're on the team. I'm a cheerleader, you know?
R: No. I didn't know that. You're pretty enough to be a cheerleader though.
M: Stop it! You're lying.
R: No, really. You're very pretty.
M: Really? Then why don't you ever talk to me?
R: I'm talking to you now.
M: That's true. Do you have a girlfriend?
R: No. Do you have a boyfriend?
M: No.
R: Would you come watch basketball practice today after school?
M: Yes, I have a cheerleading practice then too.
R: Great. I'll see you then.
M: Okay, see you then.

Situation 11 Social Studies
Robert's third period class is social studies in which students learn about
different countries and societies. His teacher's name is Mr. Bert.
Robert: Mr. Bert. I'm sick. Can I go to the nurse's office?
Mr. Bert: No, not yet. Today we are going to talk about Japan and Korea,
and I think you should stay here. After we talk, if you are still feeling sick,
you may go to the nurse's office.
R: All right. When does the class start?
B: Right now. Class, today we are going to talk about Japan and Korea.
These countries are very far away from America, but they are very important.
When I was young, we didn't learn about Asia in school, and so we knew very
little. These days, however, politics, economics, and the internet have made our
relationship to Asia closer than ever. And the two countries we have the closest
relationship to are Japan and Korea.
R: Why do we have a closest relationship with Japan and Korea?
B: Well, Robert. We buy more than half our cars, computers and other
electronics from those two countries. But more importantly, they have long and
interesting histories and cultures. Let me start with the history and culture of
Korea.

Situation 12 The Nurse's Office
After social studies, Robert suddenly feels sick again and so doesn't go to his
history class, but instead goes to the nurse's office.
Nurse: What's your name?
Robert: Robert Wallace.
N: And what is the problem, Robert?
R: My stomach hurts.
N: You have a stomachache, anything else?
R: No.
N: Okay, take this medicine. You should feel better in about twenty
minutes.
The nurse gives Robert some water and medicine which he takes. She comes back
after about twenty minutes.
N: Do you feel better?
R: No. I'm very sick. I think I should stay here until school ends.
N: That's a good idea. You have to be careful when you are sick.
R: Yes. That's what I think, too.
N: And since you are so very sick, you'll have to go home after school and
go to bed. You are much too ill to play basketball.
R: What? I can't play basketball?
N: Of course not. Especially if you are so sick.
R: But I took medicine, I feel better now. Can I please go back to class?
N: Are you sure you feel better?
R: Yes, I feel great.
N: Okay, then, go back to class.

Situation 13 Basketball Practice 1
School ends and Robert and Billy get ready to go to basketball practice.
Billy: Robert, did you get your new shoes?
Robert: No. My mom said I should use my old Reeboks. What about you?
B: I got new shoes yesterday. My mom bought me a pair of the newest Air
Jordans.
R: No way!
B: Really. They cost one hundred and fifty dollars.
R: Wow, that's expensive. My mom would never buy me shoes that are that
expensive.
B: Sure they are expensive, but good shoes make you play basketball better.
R: No, that's not true.
B: Yes, it is. Look at Michael Jordan, his shoes are the best so he is the
best.
R: No. He would be the best even if he had bad shoes.
B: How do you know?
R: I just know.
B: I'm going to ask Coach Malone if it's true.
R: Good, ask him. I'll bet you he says I'm right.
B: Okay, how much do you want to bet?
R: I'll bet you five dollars.
B: All right. It's a bet.

Situation 14 Basketball Practice 2
Robert and Billy run to basketball practice, they go to their coach, Coach
Malone, to ask him who is right.
Billy: Coach Malone, tell Robert good shoes make good players.
Coach Malone: What?
Robert: Coach Malone, tell Billy shoes are not important.
M: What are you talking about?
B: Coach Malone, I got new Air Jordans yesterday and I said they will make
me a better basketball player.
R: And I am using my old Reebocks, but I said I'll still be a good
basketball player.
M: You are both right. Good shoes are comfortable and help you not to get
hurt, but they won't make you a better player. And a great player will play
great in any shoes.
B: So who is right? We bet five dollars. Who wins?
R: Yeah, who wins?
M: Nobody wins. You are both partially right, and you are both partially
wrong. Now get ready for practice. Robert, you practice lay ups. Billy, you
practice free throws. And don't worry, both of your shoes are fine. If I had
shoes that good when I was young, I would have been a much better player.
B: See, I was right! Give me my five dollars.

Situation 15 Talking to Michelle
After practice, Robert goes to where the cheerleaders are practicing and talk to
Michelle again.
Robert: Hey, Michelle, do you have time to talk?
Michelle: Sure, do you want to talk here or go somewhere else?
R: Let's go somewhere else?
M: Okay, where?
R: How about McDonald's?
M: I like Burger King better.
R: Me too. Let's go to Burger King.
M: Cool.
Robert and Michelle walk to Burger King and order their food.
Employee: Hello, welcome to Burger King. May I take your order?
R: Yes, please. I would like a cheeseburger, fries, and a coke. What about
you, Michelle?
M: I'll have a hamburger and milk shake, please.
E: That's one cheeseburger, one hamburger, one french fries, one coke and
one milk shake?
R: Right.
E: That will be five dollars and seventy-five cents, please.
R: Handing him the money. Here you are.
E: Thank you.
M: You don't have to buy me food, I have money.
R: No, but I want to.
M: Thanks. Michelle and Robert go and sit down. So, what do you want to
talk about?
R: Oh, nothing.
M: You must want to talk about something. You brought me all the way here
and bought me food and everything.
R: Well, actually, I was wondering if you have a boyfriend?
M: No, why?
Turning red.
R: Well, I was wondering if you might want to be my girlfriend?
M: Sure. I'd love to.
R: Awesome!

Situation 16 Homework
When Robert gets home, he sits down at the kitchen table, opens his backpack,
and starts to do his homework.
Robert: Mom, my homework is a little bit hard today. Can you help me?
Mom: Sure. I'll be happy to help you, but I won't do your homework
for you.
R: Don't worry, I only ask you when I have really difficult problem.
After about one half hour, Robert comes to a difficult problem.
R: Mom, can you help me now?
M: Of course, what's the problem?
R: I don't know where Samoa is?
M: Okay, we can do this in two ways, we can look it up in a dictionary, or
we can find it on the internet. Which do you think will be more interesting?
R: The internet.
M: And which do you think will have more information?
R: The internet!
M: Well, we should go to the computer.
R: Cool! I didn't know homework could be so fun.
They go into Robert's room and turns on his computer.
M: Now, click on search and then type in "Somoa".
Robert does this and many pages of information appear.
R: Wow. I can write a whole report now.
M: Yes, but don't copy it. You have to write it in your own words or it is
cheating.
R: Okay, mom. And thanks, you are the best.
M: And don't play any computer games, just do your homework.
R: Mom, you don't have to say that. I really want to study hard.
M: I know. But I'm your mother, it's my job to say things like that.

Situation 17 Dinner
When Robert is finishing his homework, his mother makes dinner. When his father
comes home from work, Robert, his father, mother and his older brother Sam go
into the kitchen to eat dinner.
Mom: Dinner is ready. Come into the kitchen.
Dad: I'll be there soon. I just have to wash my hands. Sam, Robert you two
wash your hands too.
Sam: Okay, dad.
Robert: Yes, sir.
D: Robert, why are you being so polite?
R: No, sir. I'm not being polite, I've just decided to be a good student.
That's all.
D: I'm happy to hear that. Playing games is fun, but getting good grades in
school is important too. Dear, what's for dinner?
M: We have spaghetti and meatballs and garlic bread.
S: Great, I love garlic bread.
R: Yeah, and I love meatballs.
D: And you know I like spaghetti a lot. You are the best, dear.
M: You don't have to say that, I just love my family and I enjoy making you
happy.
S: I'm happy. And I'll be even happier if you give me some more meatballs.
D: Say please.
S: Please give me some more.
M: That's better.
R: Dad, can I talk to you after dinner?
D: Sure. But first let me have a cup of coffee, okay?
R: Okay.

Situation 18 Talking to Dad
Robert and his dad finish dinner and then go into the living room to talk.
Dad: So, what do you want to talk to me about, Robert?
Robert: Well, dad, I talked to a very nice girl today and she said she would be
my girlfriend.
D: That's great, Robert. Who is she?
R: Her name is Michelle and she's a cheerleader.
D: A cheerleader? Is she a nice girl?
R: Yes, she's very nice.
D: Yes, but does she study hard?
R: Sure. She studies hard and she's pretty, too.
D: That's good. The best woman is one who is smart and pretty.
R: Like mom?
D: Exactly! Your mother is prettiest and smartest woman I know. That's why
I love her so much. You should find a woman just like your mother.
R: I know. And I know you'll like Michelle, dad. She's a lot like mom.
D: Okay. When can I meet her?
R: Well, why don't I bring her here for dinner this Saturday or Sunday?
D: That will be fine. Why don't you make it Sunday? Your mother and I are
going to the movies Saturday night.
R: Okay, I'll invite her for dinner on Sunday night.
D: I think that will be fine, but you should ask your mom for permission,
too.
R: I'll ask her. Thanks, dad.
D: You're welcome. Hey, it's seven fifty, I have to watch the news at eight
o'clock.
R: I'm going to call her tonight and invite her.

Situation 19 Robert Calls Michelle on the Phone
Robert picks up the phone and dials Michelle's number, the phone rings.
Woman: Hello?
Robert: Yes, hello. May I speak to Michelle, please?
W: Who is call?
Suddenly nervous.
R: Um, is this 3261626?
W: Yes, it is. May I ask who is calling?
R: Yes, I'm a friend of Michelle's from school.

(Mr. Park, a Korean father, decides to go to America with his daughter Sumi. To

Mr. Park (Father): I ask you if you want to go to American with me. I will go

Mr. Park (Father): Well, my sister, your aunt, lives in Los Angeles, so I
thought we would go there first.
Sumi (daughter): Great! Then can we go to New York, Boston and San Francisco?
Mr. Park (Father): I don't know. We will be there only for a week. And New York
and Boston are very far from Los Angeles. But I think we can go to San
Francisco.
Sumi (daughter): Okay, what about Yellow Stone Park and Grant Canyon. Can we go
there, too?
Mr. Park (Father): I don't know about the Yellow Stone, it's also very far. But
the Grant Canyon is pretty close to LA, So maybe we can go there.

Egana ticket window.

Mr. Park (Father): Our plane leaves from gate number six. So we have to go
there.
(Mr. Park and Sumi go to gate number six.)
Sumi (daughter): Here is that! Gate number six.
Mr. Park (Father): Yes, let's get on the airplane.
(At the gate, an agent-employ is taking tickets)
(a woman): Good-afternoon. May I have your tickets?
Sumi (daughter): Dad, do you have the tickets?
Mr. Park (Father): Yes, here they are.
(a woman): Thank you, Sir. You'll sit at 29A and 29B.
Mr. Park (Father): Thank you very much.

Mr. Park (Father): Emigration is where they check your passport. Don't worry.

Sumi (daughter): Okay! I won't worry if we can go through emigration together.

Mrs. Kim: Well, in front of our house, there are many nice stores. I thought you
might want to take a walk and see some of them.

Su-mi (Sue): Of course I want to go. I love shopping.

Su-mi (Sue): We are looking for some milk.

Mr. Park: Of course we want to see Los Angeles, but how can you help us?
Jimmy: Uncle, I am eighteen. I can drive a car.
Mr. Park: Really? Are you a good driver?
Mrs. Kim: Jimmy is a very good and very safe driver.
Su-mi (Sue): Yeah, Dad. Let's go with Jimmy oppa and see LA.
Jimmy: Sue, you don't have to call me oppa at America. You can just call me
Jimmy. Let's go!
(They get in the car and begin to drive.)
Mr. Park: Where are we going first?
Jimmy: First, we'll go to the ocean. The ocean and the beaches here are very
famous.
Mr. Park: That will be very nice. I love the ocean.
Su-mi (Sue): Where will we go after that?
Jimmy: After that, we can go the Hollywood.
Su-mi (Sue): Cool! Hollywood. Will we see some movie stars?
Jimmy: No. But we will see some movie studios.
Mr. Park: What are movie studios?
Su-mi (Sue): Dad, Movie studios are where movies are made.
Mr. Park: How did you know that?
Jimmy: Yeah, Sue. How did you know that?
Su-mi (Sue): I saw it on the internet. Before coming to LA, I looked on the
internet for information.
Jimmy: Do you have the internet in Korea, too?
Su-mi (Sue): Of course we do. The internet and computers are very popular in
Korea.
Mr. Park: Yes. Even I learned how to use E-mail last year.
Jimmy: Really? How did you learn?
Mr. Park: Sue taught me.
Jimmy: And how did Sue learn?
Su-mi (Sue): All young people in Korea know about computers. We learn about them
in school.
Mr. Park: That is enough about the computers. Let's go to the beach.

Tommy: Hi, good to meet you, too.
Jimmy: Sue just come here from Korea. She is going to stay (here) for one week.
Tommy: From Korea? Cool! Where is Korea? Is it in China?
Su-mi (Sue): No. Korea is not in China. Korea is between China and Japan.
Tommy: Oh, sorry. But you speak Chinese, right?
Su-mi (Sue): No, of course not. I speak Korean.
Tommy: Really? I didn't know that. In America, we don't have many chances to
learn about Korea. Can you tell me some more things about your country?
Su-mi (Sue): Of course. Ask anything you want, and I will try to answers as well
as I can.
Tommy: Well, what do you eat in Korea?

Su-mi (Sue): That is not all we eat. There are hundreds of kinds of Korean food.
We eat all kinds of meat, fish and vegetables. And these days, young people also
eat pizza, hamburgers and spaghetti. Seoul is becoming a very international
city.
Tommy: Wow, I didn't know that. It's Seoul a big city?
Su-mi (Sue): It's very big. About fourteen million people live there.
Tommy: Fourteen million? That's bigger than LA!
Su-mi (Sue): Yes, you should come with Jimmy to visit Korea.
Jimmy: Yeah, let's go to Seoul next summer.

A man (Taxi driver): Okay, the Marriott Hotel. Are you here for business?

A man (Taxi driver): Well, San Francisco is a wonderful city. What are you going
to see?
Mr. Park (Dad): I don't know. Are you from San Francisco?
A man (Taxi driver): Yes. I was born and raised here.
Mr. Park (Dad): Well, what do you think we should see?
A man (Taxi driver): How long will you be here?
Mr. Park (Dad): We will only be here for one day.
A man (Taxi driver): Oh, that's not much time. If you only have one day, you
should see the Golden Gate Bridge and Golden Gate Park.
Su-mi (Sue): Yeah, I learned about the Golden Gate Bridge in school. I really
want to see it.
Mr. Park (Dad): Okay, where else should we visit?
A man (Taxi driver): You should also visit Chinatown. It is very old and had
many good places to eat.
Su-mi (Sue): I love Chinese food. My favorite is Tangsuyuk.
A man (Taxi driver): What is that? I've never heard of it before?

Su-mi (Sue): Will it only take one hour?
Mr. Park (Dad): No, it will take about two hours.
Su-mi (Sue): That's still a lot better than ten hours.
Mr. Park (Dad): Yes, it is. And if we drove there in a car, it would be take
almost thirteen hours.
Su-mi (Sue): Thirteen hours! I could never do that. I'm glad we are flying
there.

Su-mi (Sue): I liked them both. They were very different but both very
interesting.
Mrs. Kim: That is a very good answer. You are very smart.
Mr. Park (Dad): Of course she is. She is my daughter.
Mrs. Kim: That is very funny. Are you ready to go to the airport?

Su-mi: I had a great time.
Tae-gyun: What did you do? Where did you go?
Su-mi: We went LA, San Francisco and the Grand Canyon. And we saw the ocean and
the Golden Gate Bridge.
Tae-gyun: When I go next year, I will go to New York and Boston.
Su-mi: That's a good idea. New York and Boston are close to each other just like
Los Angeles and San Francisco.
(Mr. Park takes out a box from Burberry’s and gives it to his wife.)
Mr. Park: Oh, I almost forgot. Here is your present.

Caiven (Son) : We're playing a school dance party tonight. So we have to
practice this morning.
Caiven's Dad : That's sounds fine. What time is the party?
Caiven (Son) : It starts at the football game, and about eight o'clock.
Caiven's Dad : Yes, but what time does the party end?
Caiven (Son) : I don't know Dad. About midnight.
Caiven's Dad : And what time will you be home?
Caiven (Son) : About one o'clock.
Caiven's Dad : One o'clock! That's pretty late.

Caiven's Mom : Still, you should eat something. Breakfast is the most
important meal of the day.

Caiven : Then I'll take some milking cookies, and eat them in the car.
Caiven's Mom : Milking cookies are not a real breakfast. Take an orange and
banana, too.

Caiven : Cool! I want to talk to you anyway.
Baran : Sure, what do you want to talk about?
Caiven : It's my parents, they’re nice but they tranaper take me too much.
Baran : What you mean? Can you give me an example?
Caiven : Yeah, like tonight. They want me come home by twelve-thirty, even
though they know there is a party. What you think about that?
Baran : I'm not sure. My parents like me come home whenever I want. That's
fine, but sometimes thay said would care about me. Your parents are
straight, but they really love you.
Caiven : Yeah, that's true. But still, I'm not a baby anymore. I have a car
and girlfriend and everything.
Baran : But Caiven, your parents buy you that car, and they buy your a
guitar, too. I don't have a car, and I do work a part-time job by my own
joins.
Caiven : I guess you're right. My parents do a lot for me. I should be
thankful.
Baran : Yes, and since you have a car, can I get a ride to the party today?
Caiven : Yes, but like I said I have to be home by twelve-thirty.

Caiven : Okay, but I don't like coffee. I'll drink hot chocolate.
Baran : You can drink whatever you want, but let's go! There are some cute
girls in there.
Caiven : Why didn't you say so? I'm going... I'm going...
Baran : You said you want a hot chocolate, right?
Caiven : Right.
(Baran goes up to the corner norders.)
Baran : Could I please have one large coffee and one medium of hot
chocolate?
Waitress : One large coffee and one medium of hot chocolate?
Caiven : Yes!
Waitress : That would be one dollar and ninety-five cents, please.
Baran : Here's two dollars, keep the change.
(Baran takes the drinks backs to Caiven.)
Baran : Caiven, here's your drink.
Caiven : Thanks. What did you want to talk about?
Baran : I didn't want to talk. I just want to look at the girls.
Caiven : You're bad. Do you ever think about anything else, but girls?
