The Unaswered Question
----------------------
I see this question all the time:
I wrote a program. It didn't work. What did I do wrong?
Please help!!! I've been working on this for three days
and I need to get this finished in the next hour.
I'm paraphrasing for emphasis--These questions often contain a lot
more content, but what they don't contain is any useful information.
It should go without saying, but these questions seldom get a timely
(and useful) response.
The best way to get a helpful response is to consider your question
from the perspective of the person you want to answer it. People who
answer questions on these forums like to be helpful, but no one likes
their time to be wasted. Even the most kindly soul is going to think
twice about answering your question if it involves a long painful
process of information extraction. The golden rule is this: Don't
expect any more effort to go in the answer than you put in the
question. For tips on asking thoughtful questions, I strongly
recommend this website: http://www.mikeash.com/getting_answers.html.
If you need help with homework, I have a few more suggestions.
Firstly, be upfront with the fact that you are asking for help on
your
homework. It's usually pretty obvious anyway. Secondly, don't expect
to have your homework done for you. At most schools that's known
as cheating. Lastly, demonstrate with your questions that you have
attempted to solve the problem on your own. That usually involves
specific questions about why code you have written is not working
properly.
