Note a few of us are moderating the Climate Alliance Google Groups discussions, not in a censorious way, but just to stop things like one to one discussions and out of office replies being posted across to all of us. So your contribution may be delayed for a bit. Remember this is a open discussion group insofar as anybody can read it, but only people who have signed up can actually post items.

Our group is to do with the Climate matters. Could people respect this, as the group is read by a lot of people and many of you receive a great many emails. We have recently received a posting about the UK/Ireland agreement and the other day we had one about co-operatives, neither of which seemed to have anything to do with Climate Change. The Climate Alliance wishes to engage people in a wide range of issues, not just the obvious environmental dimensions, but the connections with climate need to be made. Indeed where connections are tenuous we welcome discussions which tease them out (as we had with Bombardier). But in general we do not publish items where there is no connection.

Be careful with the subject headings

If you reply by email and change the subject heading it will take the existing topic heading and change it for all. The problem with that is that when looking at the discussions you won’t be able to see those under the old heading. So if you want to start a new topic don’t reply but just write a new email  addressed to climatea...@googlegroups.com

Pithy posts

Short posts are great. However we also sometimes don't publish posting which say things like ‘I agree with you’, only in order to keep the traffic down. The best thing to do is send an email directly to the originator.

Looking at the history of the discussions and everything else.

Many users do not realise that they can look at the history of the discussions. This can be done by going to the topics; try http://groups.google.com/group/climateallianceuk/topics. This has a great advantage insofar you can build upon something that was started many months ago. Or it may be that what you want to say has already been said.  Topics, incidentally, has a search facility.

Cutting the posts down

There are various settings by which you can cut down the posts, or not receive any at all. Try the daily digest. For this and more options, visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/climateallianceuk?hl=en

The Climate Alliance Web-site

Finally can we remind people that the Climate Alliance web-site is another place to have discussions. It is our hope that we can shift some of the discussions there. Do go and have a look at www.climatealliance.co.uk

The Google Group facilities have been upgraded so that now, instead of sending to the whole group, it is possible for you to either send an email individually or reply just to the sender. You should see this option when sending an item. It has, and no doubt will coninute to be the case, that people post things to the whole group when all they want to do is send a one-to-one reply to the sender or the moderator. Because the discussions are moderated other members of the group have not seen many such items.
