Hello,

As discussed on Thursday’s national coordination call, here is a
concept
note for a “Save the North Pole (working title) activity that is both
light
and edgy and directs the focus at MPs who are failing to lead. It will
be
largely uncoordinated, i.e., groups should run with it while keeping to
the
overarching concept and message. The more we adapt it to local
circumstance
engaging actual constituents, the better. A national press release
will go
out on or around Thursday, December 10th that talks about all of the
great
things Canadian groups are doing over the weekend – candlelight
vigils,
church bells, sauvons le père noel, SAVE THE NORTH POLE etc. If you
send me
you brainstorm ideas on variations/adjustments to this idea I can
circulate
them to the group.

Right now I need to know if your organization can participate and the
ridings you would likely target. The primary focus is on swing ridings
and
MPs who have not signed the pledge or have signed but voted to delay
C311.
A list is attached. Please let me know ASAP.

Thanks! Ruth

Save the North Pole: Climate Action Now!

Objective: Encourage signatures on KYOTOplus politicians pledge /
Generate
media buzz around KYOTOplus positions and the need for a “real
deal” coming
out of COP15 (in line with TCKTCKTCK messaging)

Target: MPs that haven’t signed KYOTOplus /signed but voted to
extend
BillC311

When: Friday, Dec 11th to Monday, Dec 14th

Action: People in make-shift elf/Santa/Rudolf or other traditional
cultural
“gift-giver” costumes in communities across the country heading to
constituency offices on Friday December 11th / Saturday 12th /Monday
14th to
make a special delivery to MPs who have not signed the KYOTOplus
politicians
pledge or signed but voted to extend Bill C311. Elves/Santas can be
aided
by appropriate related symbols e.g. list of naughty and nice MPs,
carols,
giant bags of gifts for MPs who sign). Participants encourage their MP
to
sign the pledge. If they refuse, deliver a prop e.g. a lump of coal
(charcoal briquette), symbolizing disappointment in supporting dirty
energy/Tar Sands.

Media communications: Opt-in national press release for organizations
involved and a draft media release participants can tailor with their
community details.
