How is this going to affect the development builds?  It seems like they're all paused atm.

compile it yourself :) it's just 3 commands and about 17 minutes on my
Core2 2GHz

It may only be a few commands, but determining what the correct ./configure switches are can take quite some time, particularly on a Mac, where things are placed in odd locations.  The fact that there have been several issues filed with the Mac builds is evidence to this.

Now, the better solution would be to write a homebrew recipe, but I don't really want to do that at the moment.

Maybe you should also read:

Most of the advertised advantages of git are shared by other
distributed VCS software such as Bazaar and Mercurial.

(This is just a FYI. The decision of what VCS you use is completely
yours, of course.)
