Not being too familiar with the gallery and exhibition routine in the US, I was wondering how the conditions of entry compare to other shows/venues.

30$ non refundable entry fee, then 40% to the gallery if the piece sells.

Is this fairly standard ?

Just curious,

Mike

Craig agrees: sounds standard.   We are waiting for morning set.

Unfortunately yes, Mike. Sometimes the commision is 50%. I do not respond anymore to shows which charge a fee to be juried. These shows regularly recive 300 'entries', only to include 70 artists. In other words, it's a crapshoot. Many pay for the right of a few to show their work. Now, I only respond to invitations to show. I don't mind being juried, but I will not pay for the 'privilege'. YMMV.

The Glenn Richards show in Seattle is quite unusual; in that it is invitational, and they take only 30% of the sale.

Cheers! Hank

PS: Great Good Luck with your workshop in Taku_____ I'll be wishing I were there!

Hi Mike, Hank and All,

Like Hank, I just don't try to enter shows that want $30 to look at my digital photos. The whole deal just smacks of futility, to me. I am fortunate to enjoy moderate success on a local level, and am thankful for that. My Spring Show generated a great turnout and sales last weekend. Now it's time to relax and work in the garden, etc.

Localization is what it's about lately, right?

best,

I agree with Hank and Paul. Although it's "normal" nowadays, I don't like paying an application fee, and then a commission for sales, but it has unfortunately become the norm. Not much of a way around it if you want to participate in a show that requires it. Pretty demoralizing if you do good work but still get rejected from a show.

Thanks everyone for your input on this. Was not really planning to apply, but I was curious. Though I can understand paying a percentage to the gallery for selling the work, the entry fee doesn't really work for me, and it seems as though I am not the only one.

Thank you again for your input,

My last competition was when Pete Pinnell juried KC Teabowl.     I think I won 2 or 3 hundred dollars.   I respect Pete and will enter anytime he is the sole judge.
